According to a recent report by the Glasgow Times, quoting an interview conducted by Rangers TV, Ibrox gaffer Steven Gerrard has hinted that his team is keeping tabs on multiple transfer targets in the summer. The English legend clarified that numerous players are being watched, and even gave the Ibrox faithful a reason to be excited about going into what could be an important summer of transfer business for both the Glasgow clubs.
With Gerrard confirming Rangers’ ambitious transfer agenda, the onus now falls onto the board to provide the financial backing he needs. Speaking to Rangers TV, he said, “We’re still chasing targets behind the scenes, we’ve got numerous targets that we want to bring in to strengthen us and help us over the course of next season. Without giving too much information away it’s exciting times to be at Rangers. The plan for us is to get back to normality as quickly as possible, we’re all aware that’s what the players want.”
What’s On The Line For Rangers Going Into Next Season?
One of Celtic’s biggest achievements in the history of the Scottish top-flight involves denying a historic Rangers side a record-breaking tenth straight league title. With the tables now reversed, Steven Gerrard’s team will have the opportunity to enter their names into the history books of Premiership football.
This season, the Gers managed to maintain a decent enough pace until the Christmas period, after which they seemed to lose the plot completely. Gerrard will be eager to avoid a similar situation, as a blip of the same fashion could have dire effects on the result of the season itself.
Gerrard Confirming Rangers’ Ambitious Transfer Agenda: Three Positions They Must Prioritise
Goalkeeper
The Ibrox club announced the end-of-contract departures of two of their first-team goalkeeping options about a month ago, and bringing in alternatives would be essential. While the presence of Allan McGregor will take off immediate pressure to find a number one, the fact that their alternatives for the role will be Andy Firth and Robby McCrorie is a cause for concern. Moreover, McGregor, at 38, is heading into the final years of his long and illustrious career, which means that finding an able replacement will surely be on the eventual plan.
Right-Winger
On paper, Rangers boast one of the most stacked front-lines in the whole of Europe, but closer inspection would reveal all the gaping holes that are present in Steven Gerrard’s side. While they do boast an abundance of wingers, the fact that the majority of them are more comfortable in the left-sided role is a problem that must be addressed. Despite possessing around ten options to choose from, 22-year-old Jake Hastie is the only natural right-winger in the squad. If this means selling one or two of their left-sided players, then it would only be for the best, as playing Stewart out of position on the flank is sure to have consequences in the long run.
Centre-Forward
Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe seemed to work up quite the partnership between themselves throughout the season. Still, in the second half of the campaign, the duo found it a lot more difficult than usual. Gerrard should hence look to bring in a new striker who would provide the Ibrox club with an alternate attacking strategy. A tall and physical striker would significantly improve the adaptability of this Rangers front-line, and it’s arguably the one signing that Gerrard needs to make before the upcoming Premiership campaign commences.
