According to a recent report by the Daily Record, father of Feyenoord midfielder Renato Tapia has confirmed that the Peruvian will not be extending his stay with the Eredivisie club at the end of the season, thereby putting all potential suitors on alert. Tapia’s dad further confirmed that both Premiership giants Celtic and Rangers had registered an interest in the midfielder’s services, and also clarified that why rumours about an agreement with Celta Vigo are entirely false.
The report went on to suggests that Ligue 1 side Angers and MLS outfit LA Galaxy are both also keen on the midfielder’s signature. Confirming that Celtic are interested in Renato Tapia, his father said, “I’ve read the reports saying that Renato has agreed to sign for Celta Vigo and they are not true.
“There are a number of clubs interested in him, including both Celtic and Rangers from Scotland and Angers in France. For the moment, he will see his contract out with Feyenoord and will continue to train there. Nothing has been decided about his next move and we are waiting on more offers.”
What Is Celtic’s Current Situation In Defensive Midfield?
The Glasgow club doesn’t boast the strongest roster of central midfielders in the world, but already have a fairly competitive group of players fighting it out for the limited roles. Scott Brown and Callum McGregor have been the preferred choices for Neil Lennon, with Olivier Ntcham and Nir Bitton providing added cover whenever required. With that said though, it’s worth considering that McGregor is primarily a player who is inclined towards attacking.
The addition of another central midfielder, preferably a more defensive-minded one, could go a long way for Lennon’s side next season. There have been question marks surrounding the future of Ntcham, while winter signing Ismaila Soro, is yet to make his Premiership debut for the Scottish giants. With the Celts aiming for a tenth straight league title next term, it would be wise to add some much-needed depth to the core of Neil Lennon’s Celtic squad.
What Would Renato Tapia Add To This Celtic Side?
The 24-year-old is a holding midfielder by position but is capable of filling in as a centre-half or even at right-back if required. Adept at reading the play and making important interceptions, the Peruvian offers good energy as well as physical attributes in the middle of the park. His exploits, alongside the usually dependable Brown or McGregor, could result in massive wonders for Celtic next season. Standing at over 1.85m tall, the midfielder could also pose a goal threat when heading in the opposite direction.
Celtic Are Interested In Renato Tapia: Smart Move For Neil Lennon’s Side?
For starters, the fact that the Feyenoord man is available for free in the summer will come as a massive boost to the Celts’ recruitment team, who will be looking to secure as many inexpensive, yet effective signings as possible. The Peruvian boasts an excellent defensive skill-set, and at 24, he has massive room for development. The Hoops have been on the lookout for ways to strengthen their squad ahead of what could be a historic season, and in Tapia, they might have found one of the ideal summer targets.
