According to Leggo, Tottenham are pushing for a summer move for Nicolo Zaniolo. The AS Roma midfielder has been linked with a move away from the club, with Juventus, in particular, showing keen interest. However, the Italian giants are joined by both Spurs and Manchester United in the pursuit of Zaniolo, who could reportedly cost more than €60 million.
Nicolo Zaniolo’s disastrous 2019/20 campaign
Zaniolo started the 2019/20 campaign as one of Italy’s most exciting talents. He was almost destined to make a name for himself and become a household name in European football. However, he has been extremely unfortunate throughout the campaign, despite scoring four goals in 18 matches.
Roma’s injury crisis in the attacking department forced manager Paulo Fonseca to utilise Zaniolo in various roles. It hindered the Italian’s progress and established a lack of identity. As a result, the playmaker struggled with form throughout the first phase of the campaign.
Moreover, when Zaniolo did return to full form, he picked up an ACL injury that ruled him out for the rest of the campaign. He is, therefore, one of the few players who have benefitted from the suspension of football throughout Europe due to Coronavirus.
What can he bring to the table?
An attacking midfielder by trade, Zaniolo is a dynamic attacker who loves to take on defenders and create chances in the final third. He is blessed with a remarkable vision that is combined with his neat footwork, allowing him to operate as a ball-carrier in half-spaces.
However, what makes Zaniolo such a sought-after player in Italy is his versatility. Aside from his preferred number ten slot, the 20-year-old can operate as a wide attacker and even as a central midfielder. As a matter of fact, Fonseca has even deployed the Italian international in the number nine role this season.
Tottenham are pushing for a summer move for Nicolo Zaniolo: A wise option for Jose?
Zaniolo will be an exciting addition to a Tottenham Hotspur side that has struggled with creative substance, of late. The winter departure of Christian Eriksen has created a massive void. Although Giovani Lo Celso has stepped up to the plate, Spurs must not appear overreliant on the services of the Argentine star next season.
That’s where Zaniolo could be a smart investment for the Lilywhites. The AS Roma superstar can provide Jose Mourinho with a plethora of tactical options at his disposal, thanks to his versatility. Meanwhile, his tenacious and athletic nature could tune in well with the Portuguese’s tactical setup. At the age of 20, Zaniolo also has time on his side, thus making him a viable option for Spurs.
