According to Le Parisien, Thomas Meunier may have already played his final game for Paris Saint-Germain. The defender is almost destined to leave the French capital in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs interested in his services. His current contract at PSG expires at the end of the season.
The report states that Meunier is determined to leave PSG, despite publicly saying otherwise. The French champions even offered the Belgian a new contract back in autumn of last year, but it was rejected. Hence, a free transfer to Spurs this summer could potentially be on the cards, although Borussia Dortmund are interested in Thomas Meunier.
A composed head
Meunier is gifted with many qualities that make him such a highly rated fullback in European football. However, it is the maturity that is his biggest asset. The Belgian is a reliable option at the back, someone who does not make a fuss and is capable of attaining an excellent balance between his offensive and defensive duties.
This quality will be particularly useful for Jose Mourinho’s pragmatic style of play. Unlike Mauricio Pochettino, the Portuguese’s tactical setup revolves around the idea of fortification at the back. That means fullbacks often need to remain solid, which is what Meunier can offer to the table.
Unlike someone like Serge Aurier or even Kieran Trippier, the PSG star knows when to move forward. His composed nature, therefore, could allow Mourinho to employ a left-sided overload. It would make sense given that Spurs have fare more offensively talented players on the left in Son Heung-Min and Ben Davies.
Experience and winning mentality
Two things Tottenham desperately need in these dark times is experience and leadership. The likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have failed to provide that in recent times. So the onus will be on Meunier, with all his experience at the highest level of football, to motivate the backline and provide more stability in defence.
Moreover, the Belgian can instil a winning mentality in the team, having notably won three French Ligue titles and two French Cups among other accolades during his time at PSG. His hunger to succeed could potentially provide a boost to the Tottenham side, who have been highly criticised for their lack of silverware.
Fiscally advantageous
It is needless to say that the fact that Meunier is available for a free transfer could serve as a massive boon for Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites, like every other clubs in Europe, are expected to face the brunt of the financial crisis inflicted by the Coronavirus pandemic.
And with that in mind, the Belgian defender being available on a free contract should enable the Premier League giants to invest in other players on the market. That means the acquisition of Meunier will not only make sense from a sporting perspective but also from a financial point of view, making the PSG star a massive coup for Tottenham.
