Rabbi Matondo, the former Manchester City youth prospect, could soon return to the same city, but this time at the Red end. The 19-year-old, who made a switch from City to Schalke, but could soon be seen in United colours as the Red Devils are trying to bring him to England.
Earlier it was reported that Manchester United are in contention to rope in the signature of the youngster, whom they see as an alternative to Jadon Sancho. Now Manchester Evening News further states that the player has also given an affirmative response in returning to England and being in the same city again to play for United.
Why Rabbi Matondo?
Born in Liverpool, the talented player joined the youth team of Cardiff before coming to City in 2016. After developing his game there, Matondo moved to Schalke in 2019 for want of regular football, and since then he has impressed one and all with his performances on the field.
Matondo had chosen to represent Wales at the national level, and even before he made his debut for the first team at his club, the winger was selected in the senior side for his nation. This shows the kind of faith that Wales manager Ryan Giggs has on Matondo, and there is a possibility that the ex-United player has given some rave reviews to his former teammate, Solskjær, about the player.
What could he bring to United?
The former City man has played in 12 league matches for his club this season, scoring one goal in the process. He has so far racked up 608 minutes of playing time under his belt, and it is expected that this statistic would increase, now that Bundesliga is resuming this weekend.
A right-winger by trade, Matondo can also play in the left side of the field. The youngster has so far tried 1.1 shots on goal per game in the league, establishing his eye for the net. However, the other statistics, including his 0.8 dribbling and 0.6 key passes per game, could improve. But, given the tender age of the player, nobody should have any doubt that with time, the figures would start to look better.
Should Solskjær go for him?
Manchester United for long made a name for themselves by roping in homegrown British talents, and Matondo could be a great fit. The player has a bright future in the game, and given his association with the likes of Ryan Giggs and Daniel James at the national level, United may just be the right place for the teenage powerhouse.
