According to a recent exclusive report by the Scottish Sun, Premiership giants Rangers are being linked with a summer move for the services of Livingston striker Lyndon Dykes. The report suggests that Steven Gerrard is keen on not allowing Celtic a tenth league title in a row and that the Australian native striker is quite high on the manager’s transfer wish-list for the upcoming summer window. Aberdeen ace Lewis Ferguson has also been linked with a potential switch to the Ibrox.
With Steven Gerrard eyeing Lyndon Dykes, it has been clarified in the report that it’s quite likely their star striker Alfredo Morelos has already played his final game for the Glasgow club and that the Gers would be willing to sell him if the right bid arrives. It has also been suggested that in the light of Celtic set to being crowned Premiership champions, Gerrard has already switched his attention to putting a stop to the Hoops’ dominance next season. The report further claims that if Morelos is sold, the cash would be immediately handed back to Steven Gerrard for reinvestment.
What Would Rangers’ Striking Situation Be If Morelos Wasn’t In The Side?
Apart from the Colombian hitman, the Gers possess three distinct options who could fill that role – Florian Kamberi, Jermaine Defoe and Greg Stewart. The trio are all extremely different kinds of strikers, who’ve all had decent parts to play throughout the league campaign. English veteran Defoe, despite playing just 20 times, picked up an excellent tally of 13 goals in the Premiership, while Kamberi and Stewart managed four and three goals each respectively. Morelos though, without question, has been on another level to the rest of the names in the side.
What Would Lyndon Dykes Bring To The Ibrox Next Season?
The Australian-born Scottish forward initially made a name for himself in this country after making the switch to Championship side Queen of the South FC back in the summer of 2016. Although this is the kind of transfer that would’ve gone completely under the radar, his exploits for the lower league side were quite well received in all the levels of Scottish football. It was in January 2019 that the forward was signed by Livingston, only to be immediately shipped back to his former club for the remainder of the season.
Having now starred in a full Premiership campaign for Livingston, the striker has proven that he has got what it takes to perform at this level, and that’s visible in his numbers for the season. While nine goals and eight assists from 25 league fixtures might not look great on paper, it’s well worth considering that this has been his first-ever season in the Scottish top-flight. An excellent runner off the ball, Dykes has the ability to time his darts in behind to perfection, and could to that end, be an excellent fit in Steven Gerrard’s dynamic attacking system.
Steven Gerrard Eyeing Lyndon Dykes: Smart Move By The Gaffer?
Dykes has, slowly but steadily, been proving over the course of the campaign that he has got all the attributes it takes to perform at the highest level. If the forward was able to impress so much while plying his trade for Livingston, it’s anyone’s guess how well he could do leading the line for a mammoth European club like Rangers.
The level of support would be of higher quality at the Ibrox, and if the striker can settle in quickly, then there’s no reason why Dykes couldn’t take over from Morelos as the leading goalscorer in Gerrard’s setup next season.
