According to a recent report by French source France Football, Ligue 1 side Marseille are said to be among a host of clubs interested in acquiring the services of Rangers’ 24-year-old Finnish ace Glen Kamara. The report suggests that the French side had extensively watched the midfielder during the EURO 2020 qualifiers which took place over the last year and that his quality has ‘pleased’ the Ligue 1 giants.
With Rangers’ Glen Kamara wanted by Marseille, Steven Gerrard and his staff could be forced into making a decision in the coming months. The report claims that Brighton and Hove Albion, Aston Villa and even former club Arsenal have been linked with moves for the midfielder, as he is claimed to be valued in the region of £8m-£10m. With Andre Villas-Boas now in charge at the Ligue 1 club, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them spend in the summer, despite the difficult financial situation all over the world.
How Did Glen Kamara First Make A Name For Himself?
Born in the Finnish city of Tampere, the Sierra-Leone origin midfielder began his youth career with a couple of local clubs, before eventually moving to England to join Southend United back in the summer of 2011. The Rangers man spent just a year at the lower division side before he was drafted into the Arsenal youth setup.
Despite working his way up the ranks quite efficiently, Kamara was never given a debut in North London and was instead shipped out on loan. It was after the switch to Scotland that the former Arsenal man began to really come into his own.
Why Is Rangers’ Glen Kamara Wanted By Marseille?
Kamara is arguably one of the brightest holding midfield talents in the whole of the Scottish Premiership, and it’s not at all surprising that so many clubs are after his signature. Having only joined Rangers in January 2019, it’s safe to say that Kamara has gone on to become a regular feature of Steven Gerrard’s midfield. In his first season at the club, the former Arsenal man was nothing short of sensational. Although he wasn’t able to maintain quite the same form this time around, the general quality has been apparent to see.
The Finnish international is an excellent passer of the ball, while he also offers a strong physical presence in the midfield area as well. Capable of reading opposition play and making timely interceptions, losing a defensive-minded midfielder like Kamara could force Gerrard into spending in the transfer market this summer. Kamara has also become a feature of the Finnish national side over the years, having already picked up 19 caps. Despite having no goals to show for his efforts this season, the midfielder’s 19 league appearances certainly haven’t been the worst either (Transfermarkt).
Should Gerrard Look To Offload Kamara In The Summer?
Midfield hasn’t necessarily been one of the manager’s problem positions this season, but the fact remains that Kamara’s influence in the middle of the park simply cannot be underplayed. The 24-year-old offers good control and composure in the core of the side, and allowing him to depart could be asking for trouble.
The fact that Premier League sides have begun talking about the Finnish international shows the sheer amount of quality he possesses, meaning that allowing him to leave in the summer could turn out to be a disaster for Gerrard.
