Manchester United, as many would say, are on the right path with Ole Gunnar Solskjær in charge of the team. They have pulled up their socks and improved their game in the latter half of the season, which has rekindled hopes of the supporters. However, it is only fair to say that they are far from a finished product and that this summer would be a vital one in United’s hope of bridging the gap with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
It is needless to say that the Red Devils need reinforcements at the attacking end of the pitch with Marcus Rashford being their only consistent performer. Therefore, they had fancied a chance with Edinson Cavani of Paris Saint-Germain, but the latest reports would not be to the liking of Ed Woodward and others at the club.
Calciomercato cites French publication Lequotidiendufoot and states that the veteran striker is very close to signing a contract extension with the Ligue 1 champions and that an imminent transfer of the striker would not happen.
The Illustrious career of Cavani?
Manchester United are not foreign to the idea of roping in a top striker who is past his prime as a short term solution for their attacking needs. In the recent past, Radamel Falcao has had a stint at Old Trafford and so has Zlatan Ibrahimović. The latest name to be added on the list is Odion Ighalo, who had joined in January on loan from China and has impressed the manager since then.
Edinson Cavani has certainly been one of the best strikers of the world in his time with a plethora of achievements under his belt. The 33-year-old delivered some breathtaking performances in Napoli, and that earned him a big-money move to the French capital in 2013. Partnering with Ibrahimović, the duo had raked in terror in the minds of the defenders of the Ligue 1 with Cavani netting 138 league goals from his 200 appearances. The Uruguayan is at the end of his illustrious career which is decorated with six Ligue 1 titles.
Do Man United need Cavani?
It is worth mentioning that Manchester United have a very young side, with the core of their attack made up with players like Bruno Fernandes, Daniel James, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. They are a side with abundant speed, and there is every opportunity for the Norwegian manager to mould this outfit according to his liking. In this setup, a player like Cavani certainly would not fit, and it could seem like a forced inclusion.
The Ex-Napoli star cannot be expected to be tactically flexible at this stage of his life, and that could hamper the overall playing style of the team. Considering this reasoning, Cavani on the verge of extending his contract at PSG may not be the worst of news for the Mancunians or their fans, meaning they would now be forced to look at greener pastures.
