During an interview with Daily Star, Simon Grayson has claimed that Leeds United will have no difficulties attracting the interest of Sergio Romero. The Manchester United goalkeeper is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford, and the former Sunderland manager believes Elland Road may well be his next potential destination, especially if the Whites gain promotion to Premier League next season.
Sergio Romero’s struggles at Old Trafford
Romero initially joined Manchester United back in 2015, in a free transfer from Sampdoria. He was brought in as a replacement for the deteriorating Victor Valdes while Anders Lindegaard also left the club that summer. But, since then, the Argentine has mainly lived under the shadow of first-choice keeper David de Gea.
Indeed, the ex-Atletico Madrid starlet became one of the world’s best goalkeeper and the undisputed number one choice in between the sticks for the Red Devils. As a result, Romero has mustered only 58 competitive appearances during his ongoing five-year spell at Old Trafford.
Although de Gea has been linked with a move away from Man United in recent years, the Premier League giants are likely to invest in a new goalkeeper rather than relying on the services of Romero. And with the Argentine’s contract expiring at the end of next season, it is time for him to take the next step in his career.
Could Romero be a trusted option For Leeds United?
Romero’s spell at Old Trafford has undoubtedly been a disaster. However, it is fair to point out that the ex-Sampdoria star has delivered whenever he was called upon.
Also, the veteran star has been the first-choice goalkeeper for Argentina for quite some now. He has already won nearly 100 caps for La Albiceleste. This, combined with the goalkeeper’s vast experience at the highest level of football, makes Romero a viable option for Leeds United.
The Whites will be desperately looking for a goalkeeper following the miserable performances of Kiko Casilla. Although they are exploring the idea of signing Illan Meslier permanently, the Frenchman’s lack of experience could be a cause for concern for Marcelo Bielsa.
That’s where Romero could come into the fray. The 33-year-old will be an upgrade over Casilla in goal and his Argentine connection with Bielsa could surely help him settle in quickly at Elland Road next season, thus making him a viable target for the Championship league leaders.
