According to L’Equipe, Leeds United are monitoring the progress of Thierno Balde. The Paris Saint-Germain defender is undergoing talks with the French club regarding a potential contract extension. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, clubs like Leeds United, Southampton and Saint-Etienne are keeping a close eye on the defender’s current situation, ready to pounce in case the negotiations fail.
Who is Thierno Balde?
Balde is among the pool of exciting youngsters to come out from the PSG academy, of late. A right-back by trade, the 17-year-old has made quite an impression with his performances in the youth competitions and is currently regarded as one of the most talented members of the current PSG U19 squad.
Although Balde is yet to establish himself as a prominent name in the French youth department, he has been identified as a potential replacement for upcoming stars like Tanguy Kouassi. The right-back has even featured for the PSG U19, in the UEFA Youth League this season, making four appearances.
Does Balde have a future at PSG?
Following the end of the Ligue 1 campaign, Balde is tipped to earn a promotion to the senior side. In fact, the youngster could actually have an excellent opportunity to make his breakthrough next season, especially with Thomas Meunier tipped to leave the club.
Indeed, the Belgian has been linked with a move to Arsenal, and his departure could pave the way for Balde to enjoy a more prominent role in the senior side. Although PSG would still have players like Thilo Kehrer and Colin Dagba competing for the right-back slot next season, it is undoubtedly a good sign for the 17-year-old.
Should Balde move to Leeds United?
On the flip side, Balde, instead of choosing to remain at PSG, could opt for the easy way out and move elsewhere in search of more game-time. Leeds United, in that regard, might be an ideal destination.
The Championship giants are firmly in control of their destiny at the moment and are almost guaranteed to secure qualification for the Premier League. What makes Leeds an appealing club for Balde is not only the fact that they could be playing in the English top-flight but are also in desperate need of defensive reinforcements in the summer. Especially in the right-back department, manager Marcelo Bielsa is devoid of options, with Luke Ayling being the only available candidate.
Balde, in that regard, could provide competition for the Englishman and could also have a significant chance of making a breakthrough in English football. Hence, the PSG whizkid could certainly fancy a move to Elland Road this summer as he seeks to take the next step in his career.
