According to a recent report by Todofichajes, Lyon’s Dutch speedster Memphis Depay is claimed to be looking for a move away from the Ligue 1, as he looks to transfer to a club where he would receive Champions League football next season. The report suggests that Lyon’s failure to secure qualification into next season’s edition of the UCL has prompted the winger to look for a switch away.
The report suggests that Premier League outfit Chelsea are keen on Memphis Depay’s Signature this summer. It has also been claimed that the Blues’ are likely to face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham for the former Manchester United flop’s services.
Lyon president Jean Michelle Aulas, speaking on the matter, said, “Memphis tells me he’s ready to talk as soon as he gets back. His agents say he’s thinking more of a chance to start over if we’re not in the Champions League.”
What Would Memphis Depay Add To This Chelsea Team?
The Dutchman is one of the most versatile attackers in the European game at the moment. At the same time, his ability to finish off chances will surely be valued extremely highly by Frank Lampard. Capable of playing on either flank, as the number ten or even as the main striker if required, Depay has an extremely well-rounded skill set that makes him a threat from a multitude of scenarios. Although the 26-year-old’s first stint in England was far from successful, Depay has proven since then that he has the quality to become one of the best in the world if provided the right environment.
An excellent dribbler of the ball, the Dutchman is more than comfortable beating the odd defender with his trickery. At the same time, he also tends to maintain a reasonably composed head after getting into the box. Although Depay only managed seven goals and six assists in over 50 Premier League appearances for United, his record since moving to Lyon has been quite stellar. The 26-year-old’s 134 fixtures for the Ligue 1 giants have yielded an excellent tally of 53 goals and 43 assists.
What Is Depay’s History With The Premier League?
The 26-year-old was a former PSV academy graduate, who was signed by English outfit Manchester United back in the summer of 2015. Although the Dutchman arrived with humongous expectations already weighing him down at Old Trafford, saying that Depay’s stint at United was a failure would only act as a massive understatement. The speedster spent around a year and a half in the red side of Manchester before deciding that he’d had enough and found a career-saving switch to Ligue 1 outfit Lyon.
Chelsea Are Keen On Memphis Depay’s Signature: Should Lampard Sanction This Deal?
The Blues’ search for a new striker has extended far and wide over the last few months, with multiple names from various leagues being thrown into the bag every passing day. Lampard doesn’t seem to have too many criteria in place at this moment in time, with significant importance being given to the player’s ability to put the ball into the back of the net consistently. Depay would undoubtedly be an upgrade on both Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud for Chelsea. If the Blues can beat both Arsenal and Tottenham to his signature, then it would be quite the coup from the West London club.
