In an interview to Football Insider, former Aston Villa man Alan Hutton has claimed that there are multiple clubs interested in acquiring the signature of Rangers defender Connor Goldson in the summer, with Leeds United being touted to be among the names involved. The ex Rangers ace spoke about how Goldson has been nothing short of a sensation at the back for Gerrard’s side this season, and how interest from abroad isn’t overly surprising given his sheer quality.
Having given up the fact that Leeds United are interested in Connor Goldson, the former Villa defender said, “I think on the whole he’s been brilliant, he’s been a stand-up leader, he’s filled in for James Tavernier as captain if he wasn’t available.
On the whole, he’s been a very good signing for Rangers so it doesn’t surprise me big teams like Leeds are looking at him. He’s obviously had good appearances in Europe that a lot of clubs will be watching. I don’t think it’s just Leeds that are interested, I’ve heard rumours of other clubs.”
How Has Connor Goldson Done For Rangers This Season?
One of the defender’s biggest achievements this season came in the form of silent approval from Steven Gerrard, in that he started every league fixture this term. Having put in dominant displays at the back right from the start, it must be conceded that the 27-year-old has been a monumental presence for the Glasgow club. Not only has the Englishman played in all 29 league outings, but he also managed to pick up three goals and an assist along the way.
Despite making a few individual errors towards the latter stages of the season, Goldson’s overall play throughout the campaign can only be described as commendable. The defender even made a whopping 22 appearances across all the other competitions that the Gers were involved in, which included 17 matches over the course of their extended Europa League run this season. The fact that he picked up just four yellow cards in the Premiership is an interesting statistic as well.
What Attributes Do Goldson Add To The Side?
The 27-year-old is a fairly tall defender who isn’t afraid to put his large frame to use for the sake of the team. A strong header of the ball, Goldson uses his height advantage when attacking set-piece situations, while he also possesses excellent instincts and reactions for a big central defender. Adept at positioning himself in the right place to cut out opposition passes, the former Brighton man could be exceptionally well suited to the physically demanding nature of English football. The fact that he’s a goal threat also provides the manager with a bonus element to his overall play.
Leeds United Are Interested In Connor Goldson: Should Gerrard Let Him Depart?
The English defender has been a notable figure at the back for the Gers this season, as he efficiently filled in the role of skipper whenever James Tavernier has been unavailable as well. Despite the few questionable moments here and there, the 27-year-old is a vital part of the cog that Steven Gerrard currently has functioning at the Ibrox Stadium. Goldson’s potential departure could mean that the men in Blue will have to begin searching for alternatives immediately, and it would hence be in the club’s best interest to keep him in Glasgow beyond the summer window.
