According to a recent report by FC Inter News, Liverpool remain interested in acquiring the services of Inter Milan playmaker Marcelo Brozovic this summer with the Italian club desperate to tie down the player on a new contract. The same source has also mentioned that the Croatian midfield ace is currently earning €3.5m per season with bonuses, but his contract at the San Siro runs out in the summer of 2022 and contains a €60m release clause.
It is believed that Brozovic is demanding a €6m per year deal with Inter only willing to offer him a €4.5m plus bonuses package to tie him down until 2024 (via FC Inter News). The difference in negotiations will be quite encouraging for the Reds and their chances to land the Serie A star during the summer transfer window.
Brozovic’s Excellent Form At San Siro This Season
Brozovic has experienced a solid campaign in Italy where he has established himself as a top performer after putting in a string of consistent performances at the centre of Antonio Conte’s midfield. He has banged in three goals and provided five assists in 32 matches for the Serie A giants this term on all fronts which sheds light on how much he has developed under the expert stewardship of Conte.
The Zagreb-born talent has averaged 2.4 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.9 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.0 dribbles in every 90 minutes of Italian top-flight football so far. Brozovic has performed slightly better defensively in European football but has not managed to be as effective going forward after averaging 2.7 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, 2.0 clearances, 0.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in the UEFA Champions League this season. Either way, the numbers emphasise his importance for Inter at both ends of the pitch regardless of what competition he is participating in.
The ex-Dinamo Zagreb midfield enforcer has also made a name for himself at the international level after representing Croatia in 51 matches while netting six goals for his country in the process. Croatia boss Zlatko Dalić will once again expect him to play a vital role in his senior squad in next year’s UEFA European Championship finals.
What Will The Serie A Playmaker Bring To Merseyside?
The 27-year-old is highly versatile as he is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also operate in a more advanced role at the middle of the park if needed. He doesn’t have too many weaknesses in his game as such and can be considered as a perfect example of a complete modern-day midfielder. Brozovic can work his socks off to cover a lot of ground so that he is in a good position to make a crucial interception for his team. He has a good football IQ that enables him to read the game well and pull off a few important last-ditch clearances when his teammates are getting stretched on the break.
What makes him such a unique player is his ability to make a positive impact in the opposition half as well. Brozovic is an accurate ball-distributor, completing 89.5% of his attempted passes in the Serie A this season. The European sensation can also score the odd goal from midfield as he usually hits the ball with a lot of power and precision.
Will Brozovic Be A Good Fit For Klopp?
Brozovic ticks all the right boxes in terms of what Jurgen Klopp demands from his midfielders. The Reds have currently got Fabinho as their only natural holding midfield option. However, both Georginio Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson can also fill in as an alternative option in that role if required. However, Klopp would be wise to strengthen his squad by adding another defensive midfielder like Brozovic who will bring some healthy competition for Fabinho at Anfield.
At 27, the 2018 FIFA World Cup finalist is currently playing at his peak, and so Liverpool can benefit from recruiting him if the player decides not to extend his contract at San Siro this summer. With all things considered, he will be an excellent fit for the Merseyside giants and their long-term ambitions as a football team.
