According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur are braced for a defensive overhaul in the upcoming summer transfer window. The club could offload a few players – a list that includes Cameron Carter-Vickers. The academy product is likely to be sold in the summer after failing to convince Jose Mourinho but is it the right decision by the club?
Cameron Carter-Vickers’ career so far
Carter-Vickers has been a part of the Tottenham first-team since 2016. But, he has spent numerous loan spells due to the competitive nature of the Spurs backline then managed by Mauricio Pochettino. The young defender spent time at Sheffield United, Ipswich, Swansea and Stoke City before joining Luton Town in January 2020.
The United States defender has been an ever-present figure in the Luton defence so far, having made seven appearances in the Championship before the season got suspended “indefinitely” due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It is, however, fair to point out that the 22-year-old has mustered 83 Championship appearances even though he is yet to make a mark at Tottenham.
Does Carter-Vickers have any future at Spurs?
Tottenham are set to face massive problems in the defensive department next season. Veteran defender Jan Vertonghen’s contract expires at the end of the campaign while Juan Foyth has failed to impress Mourinho. Same applies to Eric Dier, whose importance at the club has tanked, following the departure of Pochettino.
Meanwhile, the ongoing pandemic is set to cause massive repercussions in the transfer market as well as the financial structure of football clubs, meaning it will be difficult for clubs to secure the services of players.
With that in mind, it would perhaps be wiser for Mourinho to keep hold of as many defenders as he can, especially with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez still failing to provide the consistency. That’s where Carter-Vickers could play a key role.
The 22-year-old can provide competition for the likes of Vertonghen as well as the first-choice centre-backs. And given the strenuous schedule of English football, Carter-Vickers’ presence in the side could help Mourinho in terms of squad rotation.
At the same time, however, offloading Dier might not be a bad idea. Unlike Carter-Vickers, the English international bags a sizable wage. That means his potential departure could financially allow Mourinho to pursue a top-class defender this summer.
