According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City have been backed to enter the race for the signature of Spurs striker Harry Kane, by TV pundit Chris Sutton. The former Chelsea and Celtic man asked the intriguing question – which of the continent’s elite clubs would be willing to pay the £200m asking price placed on Kane’s head.
After this, Sutton went on to joke that it might be easier to name the clubs who wouldn’t be able to, even if it costs an exorbitant sum of money. He further said, “His numbers — 136 goals in 198 Premier League games for Tottenham — say it all. Manchester United have been heavily linked but surely Manchester City would come in for him too. Sergio Aguero turns 32 in June and Kane would be a great addition to their line-up. The same goes for Barcelona or Real Madrid or anyone else who could afford the £200million asking price!”
What Is Manchester City’s Current Strike Situation?
Although Pep Guardiola has only had two recognised striking options to choose from for quite a while now, it’s safe to say that the Citizens’ strike-duo is arguably the best in the entire league. Sergio Aguero has been one of the standout Premier League talents of the last decade, and that goal he scored against QPR to win City the title on the final day of the season has now been etched into this club’s history books. Deadly with the ball at his feet, the Argentine attacker is now 32 and is undoubtedly entering the final years of his Manchester City career.
The other option – Gabriel Jesus, is probably one of the most underrated centre-forwards in the Premier League scene. Despite being just 23, the former Palmeiras man has completely earned Pep Guardiola’s trust this season, with the Catalan manager even permitting him to play out of position on one of the flanks.
The confidence that the former Barcelona head coach displays in the Brazilian is more than enough proof of his actual quality. While it could be argued that Jesus has what it takes to be first-choice at City, the fact remains that competition is a necessity in a football team, especially in the striker’s role.
What Can Manchester City Expect From Harry Kane?
The Englishman is undoubtedly one of the best centre-forwards in the whole continent, as can be seen from his consistent goalscoring numbers in the Premier League. Having come through the Tottenham academy, the 26-year-old has now become the first-choice striker at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With 11 goals from 20 appearances to his name this season despite picking up a couple of unfortunate injuries, Kane would be the potent goalscorer that City need to replace Sergio Aguero with eventually.
Why Pep Must Get This Deal Done At The Earliest?
Manchester City finished last season as the champions of England by a comfortable margin, and although a lot was expected of them this time around too, things didn’t go quite to plan. A Liverpool rampage saw the Citizens’ drop off the pace quite drastically, and while some will argue that it was because of the Sky Blues’ defensive worries, it’s worth considering that their attacking play was worse off than last season too. The addition of a high-potential striker like Kane to Guardiola’s squad could be the catalyst required to guide the Citizens to their ultimate goal of European glory next season.
