According to Mundo Deportivo, Harry Kane remains one of the top targets for Real Madrid this summer. Although the Spanish giants do acknowledge the fact that signing the Tottenham Hotspur forward could be difficult, they are prepared to offer either Gareth Bale or James Rodriguez in an attempt to lower Kane’s asking fee.
What do Spurs need at the moment?
Tottenham Hotspur have had difficulties finding the back of the net this campaign. Even Kane was having a somewhat disappointing season by his lofty standards before suffering an injury at the start of 2020. It was followed by the injury of Son Heung-Min, which took a massive toll on Spurs’ productivity.
It forced Jose Mourinho to play Lucas Moura in a central role. But the Brazilian’s end product remains dismal as ever while Dele Alli, despite showing glimpses of his talents, has also failed to convince in the false nine role. The Lilywhites have scored 47 goals in the league this term. However, only 13 goals of those were scored in the last ten matches.
Therefore, Spurs, at the moment, are in dire need of some productivity in the final third. A secondary striker who can provide backup for Kane or a creative star who is also lethal in front of goal is an immediate need for Mourinho.
Can James or Bale solve the problem?
Rodriguez and Bale are two of the declining stars in the Real Madrid team at the moment. That’s, however, not to say that either of these two individuals are liabilities. On the contrary, Bale is still regarded as one of the best attackers in Europe.
At Tottenham, the Welshman will provide an additional option for Mourinho in the attack. He can not only play in the number nine slot but can also strengthen Spurs’ in the wider areas of the pitch. Moreover, Bale has a considerable amount of experience at the highest level of football, having made 203 competitive appearances for Tottenham Hotspur before leaving for Real Madrid.
As for Rodriguez, he might be a redundant signing for the Lilywhites. An attacking midfielder by trade, the Colombian is very effective in the number ten role. However, with Mourinho already having the likes of Alli and Giovani Lo Celso, it could create a selection dilemma for the Portuguese mastermind.
Is Kane’s departure worth it?
If Tottenham do fail to qualify for the Champions League, they will have very little control over Kane’s future. But on paper, the potential departure of the English international will, no doubt, be the biggest blow for the club. If he does depart, Mourinho should shift his focus towards a proper replacement instead of going after a creative midfielder or a winger.
In the meantime, however, the north London giants should do everything they can to prevent Kane from leaving the club. The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic could have some effect on the market, making it difficult for Real Madrid to pursue the forward.
