According to Metro, Jesse Lingard has decided on his future after being linked with a move to Arsenal. It is believed that the Manchester United attacker is ready to decline a move to Emirates in favour of a prolonged stay at Old Trafford. However, the attack doesn’t have the best of relationship with Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer at the moment after hiring Mino Raiola as his new agent.
Arsenal’s attacking woes
Arsenal, no doubt, have one of the most talented attacking units in Europe. However, that could be ripped apart this summer, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang linked with a move away from Emirates. Also, the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Reiss Nelson and Mesut Ozil have all failed to make the desired impact this campaign.
In fairness, the Gunners have never quite been able to find flair in their offensive unit following the departure of Alexis Sanchez. Gabriel Martinelli has shown signs but still lacks the experience to be regarded as a reliable option for Mikel Arteta. Even Alexandre Lacazette has failed to find the back of the net consistently.
Therefore, the north London side are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements in the summer if they are to compete with the big guns next season.
Jesse Lingard: A star or a liability?
Lingard is arguably one of the most highly scrutinised players in world football. The English international has divided critics for his “apparent lack of talent” and productivity. He is yet to be involved in a single goal for Manchester United this season despite making 20 league appearances.
Lingard is also criticised for his lack of consistency. Although the 27-year-old is quite a hard-working attacker, often looking to close down defenders or create spaces for teammates, he can be guilty of losing focus and giving the ball away way too cheaply, at times. And this isn’t ideal for Arteta’s system that craves perfection.
What should Arsenal do?
Lingard may not have the quality to help Arsenal fight for the Premier League or even the top four places. But, he could have provided an additional creative option to Arteta, especially with Nelson and Pepe struggling with injury and form.
Nonetheless, the Gunners should shift their attention elsewhere for the time being. Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze, for one, could be an excellent target. The German international is expected to leave the club in the summer, and with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, he could be available as a free agent.
