According to a recent report by German publication Express.de, Premier League giants Liverpool are said to be interested in securing the signing of 22-year-old French striker Marcus Thuram, son of World Cup winning defender Lilian Thuram.
The youngster, who currently plies his trade in the Bundesliga for Borussia Monchengladbach, is said to have caught the Reds’ attention. Still, they will have to deal with the player’s representative – Italian-born Dutch super-agent Mino Raiola. The report further suggests that the striker could cost the Merseyside club in the region of €50m.
What Would Marcus Thuram Add To This Dominant Liverpool Side?
The youngster began his career in the lower divisions of France but has since been drafted by one of the bigger teams in the Bundesliga, and with good reason. Still only 22, Thuram boasts an unbelievable amount of sheer potential, given that at such a tender age, he already looks like a fairly complete footballer. While it must be conceded that some of his decision making in the final third is not the best, the striker’s saving grace comes in the form of his well-rounded skill-set.
The French youth international is a strong finisher of the ball, as can be seen from his returns for the Bundesliga club this season. Despite only making a move to Germany before the start of the current campaign, it’s safe to say that Thuram has managed to create a space for himself in the first-team rather efficiently. Adept at running past defenders or finding the right pass, the youngster even boasts blistering pace as well as a deceptive amount of upper body strength.
With six goals and eight assists to show from his first 25 fixtures in the Bundesliga, the youngster has proven that he has what it takes to impress in some of the biggest leagues in the world. The Frenchman’s numbers this season are mighty impressive too, as he tends to record 2.3 key dribbles and almost two shots on goal every game. More importantly, the attacker barely gets caught offside, while he is also quite secure in possession.
What Makes Thuram An Attractive Prospect For Liverpool?
The Frenchman could be hailed as the eventual successor for Sadio Mane as the pair’s playing styles are quite similar. Although Roberto Firmino is the man who is usually deployed in the ‘striker’ role, things work a little bit differently at Anfield. One of the most significant points of attraction for Klopp will surely be the youngster’s versatility. The 22-year-old played out his 25 Bundesliga fixtures this season across various positions in the front-line.
Moreover, the Reds’ bench is something that has been worrying fans for quite a while now. Although the winter acquisition of Takumi Minamino was meant to have a positive impact, it’s safe to say that the Japanese sensation has failed to live up to the billing. Thuram, on the other hand, is a much more direct sort of footballer than Minamino, and could hence force his way into the side a lot easier. Be it as an alternative to their usual attackers, or as a replacement for someone like Divock Origi, Jurgen Klopp surely can’t go wrong with acquiring this talented speedster.
