In a recent Q&A with Passione Inter, Sport BILD journalist Christian Falk provided an update on Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner’s future when he said, “Werner won’t go to Inter, there are already meetings scheduled with Jurgen Klopp.
“Liverpool is the big favourite to buy him in the summer.”
Werner’s Remarkable Consistency In German Football
If accurate, this latest development will excite anyone associated with the Merseyside club as Werner has enjoyed another brilliant campaign in the Bundesliga so far. The German centre-forward has put in several match-winning displays during this season which has made him such a fan-favourite at the Red Bull Arena.
The Stuttgart-born marksman has registered 27 goals and 12 assists in 36 appearances for Leipzig this term on all fronts which showcases just how productive he has been under the expert stewardship of Julian Nagelsmann. His remarkable contributions going forward have enhanced his reputation significantly in European football which explains why Liverpool are interested in recruiting him this summer.
Werner has been a consistent performer for the German outfit over the past few years and has continued to play at a high level this season as well after averaging 3.8 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga so far (stats via whoscored).
The 24-year-old has also made a name for himself when on international duty with the German national team. He has netted 11 goals in 29 senior matches for his homeland thus far. Werner will be expected to spearhead Joachim Low’s attack when the UEFA European Championship gets underway at the end of next season after it was delayed due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
What Will The German International Bring To Merseyside?
Werner has established himself as one of Germany’s best centre-forwards after scoring goals at such a high rate for both club and country over the past few years. He can use his pace and agility to make some driving runs in behind the opposition backline. The former Stuttgart striker has a good football IQ that enables him to get into some promising areas in and around the opposition penalty box. He can strike the ball with a lot of power and accuracy which explains how he has been so consistent in front of goal for Leipzig in recent seasons.
What makes him such an in-demand talent is his versatility to play in multiple positions in the final third. He is primarily a centre-forward but can also operate as a left-sided wide player if needed. Werner has the potential to form the new ‘Fab Four’ at Liverpool which a lot of the club’s loyal fans have wished for, ever since Philippe Coutinho’s exit to join Barcelona at the start of 2018. However, there are some concerns over whether he has what it takes to cope with the physical nature and high intensity of English football.
Although Jurgen Klopp won’t be able to ensure Werner regular game time at Merseyside, yet there is every reason for the Liverpool boss to seal a move for his countryman this summer. As mentioned earlier, Werner could strike up a fruitful attacking partnership with the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino by forming the new ‘Fab Four’ at Anfield.
The Leipzig frontman will not only bring a lot of goals and creativity to the Merseyside club but also provide some healthy competition for Mane and Firmino to keep them on their toes for a regular starting berth in the Reds’ first-team. Furthermore, the German international’s acquisition will offer Klopp more variety in attack as he will be able to switch between his preferred 4-3-3 formation to a more flexible 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 set-up depending upon the quality of the opposition on a given match-day.
