According to a recent report by Bristol Live, Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney has been the subject of interest from a variety of clubs across the British Isles, with even Premier League outfits like Bournemouth and Burnley said to be interested in his services. It has been suggested that apart from the two aforementioned Premier League sides, teams like Celtic, Brentford and Derby County are all keen on the talismanic centre-forward too.
On this regard, a previous report by the Peterborough Telegraph saw Peterborough United Director of football – Barry Fry concede that they could be forced to sell him unless they’re able to secure promotion this season. Fry further went on to say that the club would offer Toney ‘the biggest contract in club’s history’ if they’re able to reach the Championship. He said, “It’s accepted we have no chance of keeping Ivan if we don’t get promoted this season. But we’d rather keep him than sell so if we do go up I have no doubt we will offer him the biggest contract Peterborough United have ever offered.”
What Makes Ivan Toney An Attractive Option For Celtic?
24-year-old Northampton native Ivan Toney has been nothing short of a sensation for Peterborough United over the last couple of seasons and considering his numbers over the two years; it’s not surprising that the Posh have accepted that the striker could move on. As determined as they do seem to retain the Englishman’s services, it’s obvious to see that Toney is headed for bigger and better things than just scoring goals in the third division of English football.
Formerly a member of the Newcastle United squad until 2018, the striker was sold to Peterborough for a nominal fee touted to be in the region of £400,000. Despite this relatively small price, the Englishman certainly packs quite the punch, as can be seen from his scoring record since the start of the campaign. Toney’s 32 League 1 outings have yielded a commendable return of 24 goals as well as six assists, while he even scored twice in the Posh’s FA Cup run.
Despite spending quite a while at Newcastle, the attacker only ever made four first-team appearances before being shipped out to the lower divisions. Toney would have to be classed as the quintessential English striker – a willing runner off the ball having the strength and physical prowess required to bully most defenders. Also, the Englishman has an uncanny ability to put away the most difficult of chances, while he even tends to boast predatory instincts when inside the box.
Is This A Move Lennon Needs To Make This Summer?
The absolute commotion surrounding the SPFL over the last couple of weeks has tuned out a lot of the transfer talk that was coming through. Even with a situation like that, it must be conceded that Celtic could need to make a move for a striker this summer.
With massive clubs like Arsenal reportedly after the signature of Celts’ star man Odsonne Edouard, as has been reported by the Daily Mirror, the Hoops could be forced into action this summer window. Toney would be as good a bet as any to replace the free-scoring Frenchman next term.
