Rangers have been a resurgent force under Steven Gerrard after years of catastrophe at this prestigious football club. The Liverpool great used his influence and reputation to lure in big names again and were even leading the title race midway through the campaign following a derby win over Old Firm rivals Celtic at Parkhead.
However, a downfall ever since led to disappointment and despite an exquisite European run, the Gers once again could potentially fall short in the title hunt. Although the COVID-19 outbreak has suspended the game indefinitely, the Ibrox faithful are sweating over the future of striking sensation Alfredo Morelos amid interest from an array of European hotshots.
Varying Opinions On Morelos’ Rangers Future
The fans and critics, meanwhile, are having varying opinions over what should be the club’s stance in this regard. The Colombian had persistent disciplinary issues since plying his trade to Glasgow from Helsinki but, at the same time, has exhibited steady improvement as a prolific ‘number 9’.
Despite struggling since the winter break, the 23-year-old fired in 29 times in 46 games this term across all competitions and therefore, is likely to earn a high-profile transfer during the summer window.
Morelos, nevertheless, signed a new long-term deal last year to stretch his stay at Ibrox until 2023. This has enabled Rangers to hold the authority for a while over any potential future move. Either they would keep hold of him for the upcoming season or ensure the best possible financial profit (rumouredly £20m) out of the striker.
Why Bent Has a Point
Darren Bent, the former England international, has his viewpoint too. The retired centre-forward has suggested an exit while speaking to Football Insider which, he believes, would be the best possible decision for all parties involved.
“He’s playing really well, his price is never going to be as high as it is now and he hasn’t had a great second half of the season. I’d try and cash in now and try to get some money for him. If you get £20-25m you can replace him. If someone from the Premier League, £25m in today’s market isn’t going to get you a lot but in Scotland, that’s an awful lot of money.”
The rumoured sum is indeed huge considering the monetary limitation and budget constraints of Scottish football. It would boost the Bears financially as well as allow them to reinvest in fixing the shortcomings. Jermain Defoe, 37, is also at the twilight of his career and the exit of Morelos should see Gerrard roping in a couple of striking options to bolster the frontline in due time. All in all, we believe that Bent has made a fair point.
