Before the commencement of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the West London club. The transfer ban they received was something that the staff and fans alike needed time to register. Although the Blues’ loan army last season had various candidates who could’ve come into the side, Frank Lampard’s introduction induced a bit of confidence around the Stamford Bridge dressing room.
Lampard, who was the manager of Derby County last season, is arguably the greatest player ever to don the Chelsea blue. The English legend brought various loan stars back into the first-team and promoted some deserving players into the first eleven as well. As good as the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori has been, the standout youngster in this Chelsea team has undoubtedly been Tammy Abraham.
How Did Abraham First Make A Name For Himself?
The Englishman has been a member of the Chelsea academy for the longest time now, and players like Mason Mount, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori and Abraham, all grew up together. Due to this, the striker, like the rest of the aforementioned Chelsea products, obviously has a deep-lying relationship with the club. His efforts have always been commendable, while the Chelsea man’s exploits for Villa last season was brilliant. Having carried the Villans back to the Premier League last year, Abraham was rightfully rewarded with a first-team slot at Stamford Bridge this time.
How Has Abraham’s Season Gone At Chelsea?
The young striker was thrown into the mix right on the opening day of the season by Frank Lampard when he lined up in the royal blue for the first time against Manchester United. Despite having a couple of decent chances, Abraham failed to put the ball into the net. While many called for him to be dropped right after that match, Lampard seemed to stick to his guns and boy did they reap the rewards for that decision. Abraham suddenly began to look like the striker that this Chelsea side has been calling out for all these years.
The Englishman began scoring goals at a steady rate, while his hold-up play and general movement were improving game after game as well. The 22-year-old was even on top of the Premier League golden boot charts for a couple of weeks midway through the league campaign. Formerly an Aston Villa loanee, the Chelsea man has played in 25 league fixtures this season and picked up a half-decent return of 13 goals and four assists. Despite picking up a couple of injuries along the way, Abraham managed to impress quite drastically.
What Does Abraham Add To This Chelsea Team?
The striker is arguably one of the best finishers in the Premier League, and despite his tender age, the Englishman continues to work supremely hard in the final third of the pitch. A willing runner, Abraham uses the sheer size of his strides to get around defenders, while he also tends to position himself in the box perfectly. Strong at attacking set-pieces and finishing from tight angles, Abraham has the potential to develop into one of the best. He is also an excellent off-the-ball runner, as the 22-year-old tends to keep himself onside on most occasions.
Although strikers like Alvaro Morata have come and gone, it’s safe to say that the Blues still haven’t found a regular goalscorer to replace Diego Costa properly. For all the excellent work that Abraham has done, it must be conceded that the Englishman is a very different striker to the Atletico Madrid man. Abraham is a much more technical striker, who is capable of using his intelligence and positions himself effectively. He also boasts good pretty good physical strength. Lampard has struck gold with Abraham, and he’s sure to have an important part to play at Chelsea in the seasons to come.
What To Expect From Abraham In The Years Ahead?
Abraham has the potential to develop into one of the deadliest strikers in the world, as at such a young age, the Englishman is already the first-choice at a club as big as Chelsea. While a lot of that could be down to the lack of options, there’s every possibility that the youngster starts next season as the first-choice yet again. While the Blues’ search for a striker will probably lead them to someone eventually, you have to believe that Lampard would give Abraham every first-team opportunity that he deserves.
