According to Sport, Kingsley Coman has been identified as the latest transfer target for FC Barcelona. Bayern Munich are poised to brace themselves for a raid from the Spanish giants, should they fail in their pursuit of Neymar. Coman’s current contract at the Allianz Arena expires in 2023. But, will it be a good idea for Hansi Flick to let him leave the club this summer?
How has Coman fared at FC Bayern?
Coman initially joined FC Bayern back in 2015, in a two-year loan deal from Juventus. Despite injuries stifling his progress in the Bundesliga, the Bavarian club retained his services permanently in 2017, for a fee of €21 million. Fast forward to 2020; the €21m figure seems like an absolute steal.
Indeed, Coman has become a vital member of the current Bayern Munich attack, especially following the retirement of Arjen Robben and the departure of Franck Ribery. As far as performances are concerned, the winger has been involved in 67 goals in 147 competitive appearances for the club.
This season, the Frenchman started the campaign well but has scored only two goals in 15 league matches. His progress got really halted following a tear in the joint capsule, allowing Thomas Muller to redeem himself under new head coach Flick. And it wasn’t the first time that injuries played a key part in stifling the development of Coman.
Since joining Bayern in 2015, the attacker has suffered from a whopping 24 different spells on the sidelines due to injuries (as per Transfermarkt). That means he has missed a total of 76 competitive matches, which is quite insane and indicates the fact that Coman is indeed an injury-prone winger.
Why Bayern Munich needs to keep hold of Coman
Despite his dismal and rather, unfortunate, injury record, Coman’s presence at Bayern could be vital in the club’s long-term development. That is because he is now among the long-serving players in the current setup and with the Bavarians on the brink of entering a transitional phase, the Frenchman’s experience could be critical.
Moreover, the ex-PSG starlet seems to have built an excellent combination with Serge Gnabry. These two could turn out to be the designated replacements for Ribery and Robben should they manage to remain fit throughout a season.
Let’s also not forget that Coman’s potential departure could force FC Bayern to get involved in the market in search of a new winger, which is not an ideal thing to do given the current situation.
