As reported by Daily Star, Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is open to a move away from Emirates in the summer. In an interview with TNT Sports, the Argentine has admitted that he might return to his former club Independiente, especially if fellow countryman and Manchester City ace Sergio Aguero also agrees to go there.
What is Martinez’s current role at Arsenal?
Martinez has mostly lived under the shadow of goalkeepers like Wojciech Szczesny and Petr Cech throughout his career at Arsenal. And recently, Bernd Leno has joined the list of players that have stifled the progress of the Argentine, who initially arrived at Emirates back in 2010.
Indeed, Leno has emerged as the undisputed first-choice ‘keeper for Arsenal this season. The German international, after a rusty start to his Premier League career, has been one of the best performing goalkeepers in England this campaign, making the second-highest number of saves in the division.
As a result, Martinez has been considered as only a backup for the German shot-stopper. He has primarily featured in domestic cup matches, even though he did also feature in the Europa League group stage fixtures. The 27-year-old is yet to play in the Premier League so far.
Does Martinez have any future at Arsenal?
Leno is finally starting to establish himself as one of Premier League’s top goalkeepers. It is, therefore, unlikely that Martinez will be able to overthrow the ex-Bayer Leverkusen star anytime soon. In fact, the Argentine himself has appeared inconsistent with his performances in the cup games, further reducing his chances of becoming a first-choice goalkeeper for the Gunners.
Hence, a move away from Emirates might be the logical way out for Martinez. At the age of 27, the Arsenal star still has time on his side and will have the opportunity to revive his career if he gets regular game-time. And with that in mind, a return to Independiente might not be a bad decision.
How Martinez’s departure will affect Arsenal?
Even though Martinez is not considered as a key member of the Arsenal first-team, his potential departure from Emirates could serve as a massive blow for Mikel Arteta.
The Spaniard will have to make some considerable changes in the summer transfer window, which will likely cost a lot of money. Finding a replacement for Martinez, in that regard, will not only be difficult, but it can also force the Gunners to spend some additional cash potentially.
