According to a recent report from Italian media outlet Il Mattino, West Ham United are very interested in signing Napoli’s winger Hirving Lozano. However, the report adds that Everton looks the likelier destination for the Mexican attacker. With Carlo Ancelotti at the helm of the Merseyside club, it is not surprising to see them being favourites to sign a Napoli player. From Spain, Atletico Madrid are also showing a lot of interest.
Lozano’s struggles this season
Lozano shot into the limelight for his performances with PSV Eindhoven. He backed it up with a stellar World Cup campaign for Mexico in 2018. Napoli made him their record signing by paying over €40m for him in 2019. However, Lozano has struggled to get going this season for the Italian heavyweights.
The 24-year-old has managed two goals, and one assist in the Serie A this campaign, starting just eight times in the league. His record for PSV was exemplary as he had managed 40 goals and 23 assists in 79 appearances for the Dutch outfit.
With clubs like Atletico Madrid and Everton interested, West Ham are probably not the favourites to land him. Nevertheless, they should try their luck in bringing him in the summer. The Hammers though would first need to ensure their safety in the English top-flight before they can consider setting their eyes on a player of Lozano’s calibre. They are currently just above on goal difference from the dreaded 18th spot.
What is Lozano capable of?
Lozano is primarily a winger, but he can play in various roles in the attacking third. Hence, his versatility would come in handy in any team. Lozano’s standout asset is his blistering pace, and he can trouble any defender in the world when running at full tilt. The Mexican is also known for his hard-working nature. Lozano’s game should suit a counter-attacking team well.
The Hammers have failed to launched some promising players off late despite signing them with a lot of expectations and excitement. Nevertheless, Lozano would be an excellent signing as he is still in his prime. If the Hammers utilise him well, then he can be a productive player in the final third.
The team lacks runners and players who would make runs between the channels. Lozano is that kind of player, and he can add much-needed life to West Ham’s attack. However, the report mentions that the Hammers are not in the front seat to sign him. Therefore it remains to be seen whether they would be able to get him in the summer.
