According to Corriere Dello Sport, Inter Milan are ready to let go of Matias Vecino this summer for a fee of €20 million. Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs still maintaining their interest in the central midfielder, who faces an uncertain future in Italy. Spurs, however, could face competition from league rivals Everton.
What can Matias Vecino provide to the table?
Despite being a maligned figure among many experts, Vecino has enjoyed a successful time since joining Inter in 2017. He has made almost 100 competitive appearances for the Italian giants. But now, it might be time for him to move on with Antonio Conte already keen on reshuffling the midfield unit. He notably signed Christian Eriksen in the January transfer window.
Nonetheless, Vecino is still a quality central midfielder. What makes him such an appealing component in the middle of the park is his aggression and tenacity. The Uruguayan international is a strong presser, who loves to close down the opposition. This makes him a productive outlet in the second line of press. The midfielder has notably attempted over three tackles per game this season.
Moreover, Vecino is an athlete too. He can cover a lot of ground and is also quite effective in one v one physical duels. Not to mention, the 28-year-old is a careful passer of the ball despite attaining a pass completion rate of 79%.
Tottenham’s midfield crisis
Tottenham Hotspur have had a tough time dealing with their midfield problems this season. Top class midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has failed miserably while his compatriot Moussa Sissoko has also struggled with injuries. The duo of Eric Dier and Oliver Skipp, meanwhile, have both failed to impress Jose Mourinho.
As a result, Spurs have had to rely on young Harry Winks. But even then, the Englishman has appeared tentative, at times. Whether or not he is fit to lead the midfield unit in the future remains a doubt.
Where does Vecino fit in?
Vecino could be a smart investment for Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites have lacked the presence of someone who can add a bit of energy to the side, and that’s where the Uruguayan could be useful.
Indeed, the Inter Milan midfielder tunes in well with Mourinho’s pragmatic style of play that focuses on denying the opposition the opportunity to make the transition. His aggression and tenacity, in that regard, could make Spurs more useful in cutting down spaces in the middle of the park.
Vecino is also a financially feasible target for the north London giants as he is only available for just €20 million. Hence, Mourinho should look to make him a transfer priority next summer as he looks to usher in a new era at Spurs next season.
