According to Mirror, Luka Jovic’s days at Real Madrid could come to an end, especially after a row with both his club and country. The Serbian star flew to his native country, ignoring self-isolation amid the Coronavirus pandemic. And it looks like Real Madrid would be willing to part ways with Jovic in the summer and could be offered to Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
In this article, we will discuss three reasons why Jose Mourinho should pounce on the opportunity to sign Jovic this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking woes
Tottenham took a massive risk by not signing an able replacement for Fernando Llorente in the summer. As a result, Harry Kane was left as the only reliable option in the number nine slot.
The Lilywhites also failed to sign a striker in January despite knowing the fact that Kane will be out injured for the most of the remaining campaign. And that has taken a toll on their offensive department, with the club often failing to find the back of the net, especially after the injury of Son Heung-Min.
Lucas Moura has mostly led the line for Spurs. But, his lack of end product has been rather evident. Meanwhile, Dele Alli has shown glimpses of his brilliance, at times. However, he, too, is an unreliable source of goals.
A tactically compatible forward
What makes Jovic a viable target for Tottenham is his tactical astuteness. Unlike any physically well-built forward, the Serbian is an all-round striker, who has an excellent understanding of the game. His biggest asset, however, is aggression and tenacity.
Indeed, Jovic often looks to close down the opposing ball-carrying defenders. It makes him an effective outlet in the first line of press. That is why Eintracht Frankfurt, with their high line of press, achieved tremendous success under the leadership of Niko Kovac.
Similarly, Mourinho also likes his team to cut down passing lanes for the opposing defences. It allows his team to create turnovers in the dangerous areas of the pitch. And with that in mind, Jovic is a tactically compatible forward for the Portuguese mastermind as far as his style of play is concerned.
One for the future
Rumours surfaced earlier this month regarding Kane potentially leaving Tottenham Hotspur in the summer if they fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. That could be a huge blow for Mourinho. But, the ex-Real Madrid boss could use Jovic as a contingency plan.
As mentioned earlier, the Serbian enjoyed a lot of success at Eintracht Frankfurt. If he can replicate his performances in the Premier League, he might be an ideal long-term replacement for Kane. And at the age of 22, he also has time on his side and can only improve himself as a striker. However, it remains unclear whether Real Madrid would want to sell Jovic permanently in the summer.
