Rangers’ season has practically come to an end except for the distraction in Europe where they have punched above their weight. Steven Gerrard was primarily brought in to stop Celtic’s massive domination in the recent years, and his side is now going to go in the last chance saloon as this season’s title race is as good as over. Rangers have also flopped in domestic cups as they have played just one cup final out of a possible four under Gerrard.
Quite a few believe that this current Rangers team aren’t able to raise their game on big occasions. They can easily be put in their shell if the opposition is aggressive and in their face. Some of the more established players have made high profile errors, and many doubt whether they have it in them to play for a club of Rangers’ calibre and win trophies. Only Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and Ryan Jack have a history of winning some kind of silverware.
Here are two first-team players who we think could be on the chopping block in the summer.
Two First Team Rangers Players Steven Gerrard Should Consider Selling This Summer
James Tavernier
The club captain might have some brilliant stats going his way in the last couple of seasons, but it cannot be denied that he has has been a liability in defence. His positional sense is poor and being an attack-minded fullback; he is caught out of position more often than not. Tavernier can also be bullied by wingers who are willing to have a go at him. The fullback also lacks composure when he is put under pressure, and the weight of Rangers jersey seems to be a bit too much for him.
The captain had recently admitted the club’s shortcoming by saying (Daily Mail), “Whenever anybody puts pressure on us in Scotland or gets in our face, it seems to affect us too much. We are not good enough domestically at the minute to react to that.” The comment obviously didn’t go down well with the fans.
The comment implies that the dressing room lacks winners and leaders. Being a captain, one of the primary jobs of Tavernier is to keep the players going when the chips are down. However, the defender himself is often the most affected when things get tough.
Connor Goldson
Goldson was brought in as a leader of the backline, but like Tavernier, he also enters into panic mode when the pressure is applied to him. Nikola Katic and others have also let the fans down, but they have age on their side. To go with his defensive vulnerabilities, Goldson is poor with the ball at his feet. Hence, Goldson could be on the chopping block as well.
