Newcastle United had been linked with Alfredo Morelos in the past few months. The Colombian striker was in the limelight on the back of his strong performances in the first half of the season. However, the Magpies didn’t move in for him in January. Latest reports from Daily Star states that Newcastle are still keeping track of Morelos, but Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard has emerged as the priority target for them.
Steve Bruce had publicly admitted that he would like to have Morelos if he became available. But now it seems like the Magpies have shifted their focus towards Edouard.
This might be seen as a blessing in disguise by some section of Rangers fans as the Bears might be able to keep hold of Morelos for longer. However, there is another section of fans who believe that Rangers should make the most of Morelos by selling him and investing the transfer fee in the rest of the squad.
The Colombian has let down the team in the second half of the campaign as Rangers have struggled to keep pace with Celtic since the winter break. The 23-year-old had managed just one goal since the turn of the year before football was stopped due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
It would be interesting to see what would Gerrard do with Morelos. Former Rangers striker Billy Dodds recently indicated that the English manager should part ways with the Colombian ace.
What now for Gerrard?
It is undoubtedly a tough decision to make for Gerrard. Also, this is slightly harsh on Morelos that he is being considered being sold even though he has 29 goals this campaign. However, it cannot be ignored that he has failed to rise to the occasion in the second half of the season. Coupled with some disciplinary issues, he has missed some games as well.
We believe that if Gerrard gets an offer near £20m, he should consider selling the Colombian striker. However, Morelos’s lack of form in the second half of the season might mean that there might not be too many clubs looking to come up with an offer like that. It could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Rangers if they want to keep the striker. However, they would need funds to build the side again, especially at the back, and hence, the departure of Morelos could be crucial. Nevertheless, Gerrard should hold on to a price tag of at least £20m for his prized asset.
