According to a report from Voetbal4U as cited by the Shields Gazette, AZ Alkmaar wants €20m for 19-year-old forward Myron Boadu. Newcastle United have been linked with the Dutch forward in the past month as they have reportedly been keeping tabs on him.
The young striker has come up from Alkmaar’s academy, and he has been in blistering form this campaign for them. Boadu has contributed with 14 goals and eight assists in the Eredivisie in 24 appearances. The Dutch international has 20 goals and 13 assists in all competitions this season.
Ronald Koeman handed him his national team debut not too long ago. Boadu is reportedly attracting interest from several Premier League clubs. Along with them, AC Milan, Juventus, and Napoli are also said to be in the mix.
Why Newcastle United need a striker?
The Magpies have struggled to score goals freely this campaign, and they have the joint-worst goal scoring record in the Premier League so far. Joelinton has failed to live up to expectations this season after his big-money arrival in the summer of 2019. The likes of Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll have been inconsistent, and they have struggled with injuries. Hence, it is understandable why the Toon are eyeing a move for a new striker for the next season.
What can Boadu bring at St. James’ Park?
Boadu has contributed consistently in the attacking third for Alkmaar. The striker also has the knack of finding the right pass in the final third which is why he has 13 assists in all competitions this season. Boadu’s standout assets are his pace and ability to carry the ball forward. His finishing also looks up to the mark, and that is why he made his Netherlands debut when he was just 18. The striker also bagged a goal for Oranje against Estonia.
Given his impressive pace, Boadu can even feature as a left-winger. However, the Newcastle target is at his best in a central role where he looks to make runs from the shoulder of the last defender.
However, as we have seen with Joelinton, the Premier League can be a different gravy. There is no guarantee that Boadu would hit the ground running in the English top-flight. Nevertheless, for the price tag of €20m, we believe that the young striker would be a handy signing.
To be fair though, Newcastle United will need to change their playing style to suit Boadu’s game. Otherwise, even Boadu could end up struggling like Joelinton. With heavyweight clubs like Juventus and Napoli also interested, it remains to be seen whether Steve Bruce would be able to get him or not.
