According to a recent report by Spanish publication El Desmarque, Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are said to be lining up a potential summer move for the services of Real Madrid’s Brazilian international centre-half Eder Militao. It is reported that Jose Mourinho has already been in touch with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez about this transfer and that the Portuguese manager sees the Brazilian as a good long-term replacement for Jan Vertonghen.
The veteran Belgian defender’s current contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to expire in the summer, meaning that Eder Militao could be brought in to take the versatile centre-half’s place in the squad. Although it has been claimed that the 32-year-old could still sign a new deal in North London, the Lilywhites’ current interest in the Real Madrid man sends out a completely different message.
How Has Eder Militao’s First Season In Spain Panned Out?
The 22-year-old was originally a product of the renowned São Paulo academy, where he made a name for himself as one of the many promising young defenders. After a spell at Porto, the youngster arrived at the Spanish capital with fairly hefty expectations already placed on his shoulders.
Having signed for a whopping €50m just last summer, it’s safe to say that the Brazilian has failed to live up to the hype, and very much remains a player on the fringes of this stacked Real Madrid side.
The centre-half was brought in with a view of him eventually replacing Sergio Ramos as the first-choice defender in this team, and that’s a legacy that the Brazilian could still achieve given the right situations. The youngster has featured just nine times in La Liga all campaign, and he’s yet to pitch in with a memorable contribution. With only 13 professional games under his belt at the club despite having spent more than six months, the former Porto man could be tempted to search for regular playing time elsewhere.
Why Zidane Mustn’t Allow Eder Militao To Leave In The Summer?
Despite all the good work that this Real Madrid defence has done this season, one of the biggest concerns for the long-time followers of the club will be finding the eventual replacement for Sergio Ramos. The veteran defender has been a stalwart in the Madrid back-line for the longest time, but now 33, his tenure at the highest level is slowly but surely drawing to a gradual close. Eder Militao could be the ideal candidate to fill that slot.
Despite being just 22, the youngster has showcased his quality and composure on multiple occasions over the last few seasons. The Brazilian’s performances for the national side as well as his last Portuguese employers showed himself in an excellent light, and although he hasn’t quite been able to replicate the same form yet, it’s safe to say that his time would come. A club like Real Madrid wouldn’t throw money at a player unless they’ve done their research, and when the man in question is a youthful defender like Militao, time can be a greedy thing.
