According to a recent report by Sport, Liverpool are set to rival Real Madrid, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to acquire the services of Eduardo Camavinga from Stade Rennais this summer. However, the Ligue 1 outfit will demand a fee in excess of €50m for their prized asset, who will turn 18 later this year (via Sport).
Camavinga’s Spectacular Rise In French Football
The talented teenager has made a name for himself in the French top division after performing at a high level at the heart of the Rennes midfield. He has been involved in 36 matches for Julien Stéphan’s team this term, scoring one goal and providing two assists on all fronts which goes to show that he is improving his offensive numbers with each season.
More importantly, Camavinga has averaged 4.3 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 1.3 clearances per 90 minutes in league football this season (stats via whoscored). His defensive contributions helped his side climb up to the fifth position in the league standings before their season came to a standstill because of the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
The 17-year-old made his debut for the French Under-21 side when he played for the full 90 minutes in a UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifier versus Georgia back in November last year. He will be in line to play a crucial role for his nation as long as he can continue making progress in the coming years.
What Will The French Prospect Bring To Merseyside?
Camavinga is a moderately-paced midfielder who can make some powerful runs in the opposition half. He is quite aggressive in the way he approaches the game and is usually accurate with his ball-distribution. The French whizkid is not afraid to get stuck in with a few tackles and can position himself well to cope with the danger by making some crucial last-ditch clearances for his side.
A midfielder of Camavinga’s potential will undoubtedly be a massive coup for the Reds if they can find a way to win the race to land him this summer. He will be a player to look out for in the future, so it makes sense for Liverpool to move in for him and develop him into a world-class midfielder under the watchful eyes of Jurgen Klopp.
Camavinga is already good enough to challenge for a first-team place at Anfield so Klopp can immediately make room for him in his squad. The departure of Adam Lallana will free up space for the Merseyside club to sign another midfielder in the off-season. Recruiting a player of Camavinga’s skillset will also provide some healthy competition for Fabinho and Jordan Henderson for the right to operate in one of the holding midfield positions in Klopp’s first-team.
The German head coach will also get the freedom to take a more flexible approach with his formation and tactics in the upcoming campaign if he can get a deal over the line for Camavinga before the start of the new season.
