According to a recent report from Spanish media outlet Sport, Liverpool are showing interest in their former playmaker Philippe Coutinho. Barcelona are still in the dark regarding whether Bayern Munich would exercise the chance of signing him on a permanent deal. The report states that the option to continue at Barcelona is ruled out.
Coutinho has given mixed performances for Bayern Munich this season, and his struggles have continued ever since he left the Merseyside club. Liverpool, on the other hand, have reached greater heights since the departure of Coutinho and it would be really surprising to see him head back to Anfield in our opinion.
Henderson’s recent comment about Coutinho
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson insisted recently that he would love to have Coutinho back, but he also believed that his time has passed at the club. Henderson had said (Daily Mail), ”Of course, for me, he would be welcome back, but it doesn’t depend on me. It’s probably best to ask the manager that. The guys adore him, so if you ask any of them, I am sure they would say they would love to have him back. But I think his time here has passed, he’s moved, and I hope that in the near future, we see the same Phil that we saw here.”
Should the Reds consider Coutinho?
Liverpool rely heavily on their front three and fullbacks for creativity and attacking threat. The midfield does more of the dogged work in Klopp’s side. There has been criticism in some quarters that the Reds lack a playmaker in the middle to open up teams that like to defend deep.
Hence, one might still feel that Liverpool would need a central attacking midfielder. At his time with Liverpool, Coutinho was one of the best players in the Premier League, and as a result, he earned a big-money move to Barcelona. His ability to pop in with crucial goals and open up defences with smart passes stood out.
However, it cannot be ignored that the 27-year-old is on a downward trajectory. Moreover, Barcelona will try to cut as much loss as possible by selling him at a higher price. We believe that if Coutinho is available for somewhere around £50-60m, then the Reds should consider getting him. However, it is believed that Barcelona would try to use him as leverage to bring in Neymar in the summer.
Coutinho continues to divide opinions among Liverpool faithful. Some see him as good riddance after he engineered his move to Barcelona. Others would still love to see him put on the famous red jersey again. We believe that Klopp should only consider him if he can land the Brazilian on a bargain deal.
