Recently reports (Birmingham Mail) had emerged that Trezeguet had agreed on a deal to move to Besiktas. It was shocking news as Trezeguet had signed for Aston Villa just last summer only. It was believed that Arsenal midfielder and his fellow countryman Mohamed Elneny, who is on loan at Besiktas, convinced him to move to the Turkish outfit.
Trezeguet committed to staying at Villa Park
However, Trezeguet squashed those rumours by saying that he is committed to his contract. Speaking to King Fut website as cited by Birmingham Mail, Trezeguet said, “I am committed to the contract, Playing in the Premier League was a dream for me, so I am completely focused on that step.”
It seems clear that Trezeguet intends to stay with the English club. The 44 time Egypt international earned a move to Villa after he impressed for Kasimpasa in the Turkish top flight. The Birmingham based outfit managed to bring him in for £8.75m last summer.
The winger has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring four goals and providing three assists. Trezeguet scored the crucial late goal in the second leg of the semi-final in the Carabao Cup against Leicester City which sent Villa to the finals.
However, it cannot be denied that the 25-year-old has put in underwhelming displays for most of the season. He has struggled to make a significant contribution even though he got a good run in the first team. Villa still have him under contract until 2023 but honestly speaking, Trezeguet doesn’t seem to have it in him to succeed in the English top flight.
His dribbling has often looked predictable, and he has been guilty of not making the right decision in the final third. Given that Villa gets limited chances in a game, it becomes imperative for them to be clinical in the attacking third. Trezeguet has also struggled on the physical side of the game as he has been shrugged off far too easily on some occasions.
What should Smith do?
If Villa manages to stay up, then they should look to ship him away. The winger might have cleared the air on the recent rumour, but it cannot be denied that he does not seem a Premier League quality player. Hence, they should look to part ways with him in the summer. However, if they go down to the Championship, then Trezeguet can turn out to be a decent player in the English second division.
