Rangers’ domestic campaign is as good as over and barring a miracle in Europe; Steven Gerrard is likely to end up trophyless for another season in Scotland. The team raised hopes after their performance in the first half of the season, but they have tapered off since the winter break giving Celtic a massive advantage in the title race.
Trevor Sinclair indicates Gerrard might sell Morelos
Former England international and Gerrard’s team-mate at the national level Trevor Sinclair recently claimed that Gerrard might end up parting ways with Alfredo Morelos in the summer. Speaking on TalkSport (via Daily Record), he said, ”I will be surprised if he (Gerrard) sticks with him (Morelos) because it will be a huge season in the league (next season). They certainly wouldn’t want Celtic to get to that, 10.”
”I don’t think Alfredo is doing enough in a positive way. Every time you read headlines about him, it’s not about him scoring hat-tricks. It’s about him being late, getting carded, saying this or doing that. I’d be surprised if Steven sticks with him just because I know what Steve is like as a professional. I know how much it means to him to have success at Rangers.”
Why it looks possible?
Morelos has undoubtedly hurt his chances of a big move in the summer after his performances in the second half of the season. However, it cannot be denied that his goal scoring record for this season is exemplary. The striker has 29 goals in all competitions along with ten assists.
But Morelos’ disciplinary problem has reared it’s ugly head, and he did miss some crucial games since the break. The striker also seems to be a ‘confidence player’ as when things are not going well for him, he will often struggle to find the net. Gerrard has continued to back Morelos under all circumstances so far, but Sinclair might be right that things could change in the following season.
If Gerrard can get £20-25m in transfer fees for Morelos, then he could look to use that money to build a more stable outfit. The defence is one area where the club might have to invest heavily. It remains to be seen though whether the Bears would get an offer in that region or not. The Colombian needs to pick his game up soon to showcase that he can turn things around after a bad run of form.
The striker has been in the news for wrong reasons, but he is not at fault every time if truth be told. Maybe even Morelos might want to move away given the way he is portrayed in most sections of the media. It won’t be surprising to see Gerrard parting ways with Morelos next summer as Rangers might need some change in personnel to deliver the 55th title.
