Rangers are very likely to come up short in stopping Celtic from achieving their ninth title in a row. The Bears have also faltered in domestic cup competitions, and Gerrard’s men have reached just one final in a possible four in the last two seasons.
The Bears have gone through a massive change in personnel in the first team, but it seems like the gaffer will need to rebuild his side again as the current lot doesn’t look good enough to overtake Celtic. Former Rangers and Chelsea striker Billy Dodds believe that Rangers will have to think about parting ways with two big players like James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos for the next season.
Dodds suggestion to Gerrard
Speaking to Glasgow Evening Times Dodds said, “I think Rangers have to make a definite decision with Alfredo Morelos once they get this season over with. Tavernier) had a tough time this season because he has lost confidence and his manager had to stick by him. If you are going to try and close that gap then for me those players aren’t working anymore. They have to change, and a decision has to be made.
“Whether it is suspension, whether it is mistakes, whether it is not turning up, you have at some point got to say I have to change the philosophy somewhere along the line. I’m just putting it in black and white. I think you have to take the gamble at some point and say sorry I can’t continue with this, and we won’t be catching Celtic if we keep these guys (Tavernier and Morelos).”
Should the manager consider it?
Tavernier and Morelos have been two nailed on starters for Rangers under Gerrard, and the manager has backed them consistently even when they have put in some poor performances. However, Dodds has a point that maybe Gerrard is backing the wrong horse here.
Tavernier has the habit of making high profile errors in crucial games. Morelos has also failed to turn up when the manager has needed him the most. Maybe the upcoming summer could be the right time to cash in on them. With the money Rangers gain from selling those two, they can look to rebuild a more balanced squad which would be more suited to Gerrard’s needs.
Morelos’ form must be a worry for the gaffer as he is the biggest asset at Ibrox right now. If he fails to find his form, then not many clubs would come up with an offer which could turn Gerrard’s head in the future. It’s harsh on someone who has managed 29 goals this season, but it cannot be denied that the Colombian had let the team down in the last two months when the crunch time of the season came on. Hence, we think that Gerrard should definitely consider Dodds’ advice.
