Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City succumbed to their seventh league defeat of the campaign, after losing 2-0 to fierce rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. A brilliantly worked Bruno Fernandes set-piece was met with exquisite finesse by Anthony Martial in the first half, and that goal proved to be a gutting blow to this City attack. Despite putting a lot of pressure, a late strike by Scott McTominay ensured that the Citizens left the red side of Manchester with nothing to show for their short trip down Manchester.
Manchester City Players Rated In Defeat Vs Manchester United
Ederson – 2
The keeper’s worst ever display in a City shirt, as he cost Pep Guardiola’s side both the goals on the night. Fluffed his parry on the United opener, before gifting it to McTominay late on for the second.
Joao Cancelo – 6.5
The former Juventus full-back tried to get forward whenever the avenues presented themselves in the first half. Moved the City team forward in the late stages as United began to defend deep.
Nicolas Otamendi – 4
The Argentine veteran looked far from comfortable against a pacy United front-line. Could’ve easily given Manchester United a penalty on another night after lunging in on Fred.
Fernandinho – 7
The experienced Brazilian continues to be a hallmark of consistency in the back-line for City, as he was as calm and composed as ever. Maintained composure all through the ninety.
Oleksandr Zinchenko – 5
The youngster made some good attacking advances throughout the fixture but was careless in possession at times. Linked up well with the attackers but couldn’t produce any end product.
Bernardo Silva – 6
The Portuguese trickster didn’t have his usual impact in the middle of the park because of how United were set up. Couldn’t find himself any space in between the lines.
Rodri – 6.5
The Spaniard worked tirelessly in the middle of the park, linking up the play and trying to create gaps between the tight United lines. Wasn’t given too much time on the ball to pick out passes though.
Ilkay Gundogan – 6.5
Like Rodri, the German tried to inject energy into the City attack with his one-touch passing and rapid movement. Wasn’t able to produce anything meaningful in the final third.
Phil Foden – 5
Probably not the right game to start the youngster, Foden played some good balls into the box from his starting position on the right flank. Didn’t have the same impact after he was moved centrally.
Sergio Aguero – 6
The Argentine striker wasn’t allowed too much running room by a well-drilled United defence tonight. He put the ball into the net at one point, only to be called marginally offside by a VAR decision.
Raheem Sterling – 4.5
The Englishman was completely pocketed by his opposite number Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Had a glorious chance in the late stages of a Riyad Mahrez cross, but couldn’t find the right contact.
Substitutes
Gabriel Jesus – 6
The young Brazilian replaced Aguero around the hour-mark and tried to impact the tie in any way he could. Made some good runs in behind the defence but was well marshalled by the United defenders.
Riyad Mahrez – 6.5
Brought a bit of pace and energy to the flank after he replaced the tiring Bernardo Silva. Played in a special ball to Sterling for a tap-in, but the Englishman failed to put it away.
Benjamin Mendy – NA
Didn’t have time to make an impact.
