According to a recent report by Football.London, Premier League giants Chelsea are the latest club to be linked with Barcelona youngster Marc Cucurella, who is currently plying his trade for Getafe on loan from the Catalan side. The youngster is said to have impressed during his loan stint away from the Camp Nou, and the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham had previously shown interest in the Spaniard’s signature.
The report suggests that Chelsea are the latest entrant in the race for his services, which could be acquired by triggering his €25m release clause. The Blues are said to have recently begun scouting the youngster, as they have been in search of left-sided players for quite a while now. Although it has been suggested that Getafe will try and make the youngster’s deal a permanent one at the end of the season, that could prove quite tricky considering the parties actually involved.
Who Is Marc Cucurella?
Born in the Spanish town of Alella, the youngster began his playing career at a local football club and then Espanyol, before eventually joining the La Masia youth system back in the summer of 2012. Although his impact wasn’t immediate, it gradually became clear that the curly-haired Spaniard was destined for big things. Despite this, he’s found the going quite hard at the Nou Camp.
Having spent a loan spell at Eibar, the youngster was signed by Los Armeros in the following summer, only to then be bought back by Barcelona less than two months later, and then shipped out again to Getafe.
What Does Cucurella Bring To The Table?
The 21-year-old is a versatile midfielder, who can operate anywhere across the left side of a team. Although the youngster’s preferred position would be further up the park, he is also adept at covering in the left-back area. The Spaniard has often been seen playing in advanced attacking roles down that end as well. Especially strong at delivering crosses from wide, the Barcelona product is also an excellent dribbler of the ball.
Despite the Spaniard’s tender age, he does seem to have the right physicality and mental prowess to excel in the Premier League. Having been trained at the Blaugrana academy, passing is an attribute that would be embedded into his skill-set at this point. Moreover, despite being just 21, the youngster shows great maturity in high-pressure situations and has proven in the La Liga that he can step up when his team needs him most.
Why Chelsea Must Get Cucurella In The Summer?
The Blues have been on the lookout for talented young attackers for a while now, but don’t expect the winter acquisition of Hakim Ziyech to slow down their progress in the coming weeks. The left-wing has been one of Lampard’s problem areas since the start of the season, with both Marcos Alonso and Emerson showcasing their inconsistencies on various occasions. The youngster would fit right into the system that Lampard is trying to build at Stamford Bridge, and beating their London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal to his signature must become one of the gaffer’s priorities for the summer.
