According to a recent report by TuttoUdinese, as has been cited by the Daily Express, Premier League giants, Chelsea are said to be leading the race for the signature of Udinese Calcio’s Argentine international shot-stopper Juan Musso. The report claims that Chelsea are eyeing up a move for the Serie A custodian in the summer, with a view of him potentially replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga as the first-choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge.
It has been suggested in the report that the Blues are in the ‘front row’ when it comes to the 25-year-old and that there are currently no financial limitations in place either, meaning that the transfer fee itself shouldn’t be a problem for the London club.
The London club’s search for a goalkeeper has been no secret, and Musso is the latest name added to a list of potential targets that already includes key names like Jan Oblak, Dean Henderson, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Andre Onana.
What Has Caused Lampard To Seemingly Give Up On Kepa Arrizabalaga?
The Spaniard arrived at West London on deadline day ahead of the 18/19 Premier League campaign, as the Blues desperately scrambled to make a signing between the sticks. With the danger of having to start the season with Willy Caballero as first-choice, Chelsea went on to pay an exorbitant amount of money to Athletic Club for Kepa’s services. Although his career as a Chelsea player did start brightly, things have taken a turn for the worse in the previous few months.
Kepa started the season as the number one, but Frank Lampard took the difficult decision of dropping the Spaniard owing to the poor standard of his performances. The former La Liga star tends to concede a goal every 70 minutes or so, and that’s a statistic that will surely have come as a concern for the manager. Also, with a clean sheet ratio of just 24% and one of the worst save percentages in the entire league, it’s no surprise that the Blues are on the lookout for quality alternatives.
How Would Juan Musso Be An Improvement On Kepa?
Although he plies his trade in the Serie A, it must be conceded that Udinese aren’t a club that are quite at the same level as Chelsea. Despite this, the Argentine shot-stopper boasts a similar number of goals conceded. Having shipped 37 goals from his 26 league fixtures, Musso’s goal per game ratio is also around 1.4. Moreover, the Udinese man’s save percentage of almost 75% is exactly what is required at a club like Chelsea.
Kepa has come back into the team over the last couple of fixtures, but it seems that Lampard is unsure regarding the Spaniard’s quality. Despite some positive signs, it’s gradually becoming obvious that Kepa just doesn’t have the reaction or flexibility to excel in the Premier League.
Musso, on the other hand, boasts a truly sensational save percentage, meaning that a proactive shot-stopper like himself could be the ideal fit at Stamford Bridge.
