According to a recent report by Metro, Premier League high-flyers Chelsea have been linked with a possible summer move for the services of prodigious Manchester United attacking midfielder Angel Gomes. The youngster has just three months remaining on his current United contract, which is set to run out at the end of the current season. There is also said to be a certain impatience from the player’s end about his progress within the club
Although United are said to have offered the Englishman a £25,000 a week extension, nothing has been set in stone just yet. It has been suggested that the Red Devils think that is a fair amount for a player who’s been at the club since he was a boy, but Gomes’ representatives believe that he deserves better pay.
United though, feel that the diminutive midfielder’s development will be slower than usual, and that’s probably why he’s often been compared to Jesse Lingard, who didn’t break into this Manchester United team until he had already turned 24.
What Would Angel Gomes Add To This Chelsea Team?
The youngster is one of the highest-rated members of the United youth system, and it’s no surprise that a club like Chelsea are keen on his signature in the summer. Despite being small in stature, the midfielder is an excellent passer of the ball, and he tends to time his passes and runs in behind the opposition defence to perfection as well. Adept at linking up play just in behind the main striker, Lampard’s willingness to throw young players like Billy Gilmour and Armando Broja into the mix would’ve surely come as motivation to Gomes’ representatives.
Also, considering the current youth revolution at Chelsea, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Frank Lampard award talented young players like Gomes with opportunities. Originally from London as well, the United man is one of the most sought-after young English midfielders in the game right now, and a summer move would turn out to be a reasonably massive coup by the Blues.
Why Chelsea Must Go For Angel Gomes In The Summer?
The youngster is clearly unhappy with his current situation at Old Trafford, with players close to his age in Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams being given regular first-team opportunities. A move to Stamford Bridge would effectively guarantee more playing time, as the Blues have quite a few more weak links in the attack that the Red Devils.
The likes of Pedro and Willian are already the wrong side of their thirties. At the same time, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic could be considered too young to deliver consistently. Gomes, at 18, shows great maturity as well as composure on the ball for his age. He will be a smart addition by the Stamford Bridge club if they’re able to get it done in the summer. Chelsea’s business model has always involved the purchases and sales of various young players, and when it comes to young players, Angel Gomes is among the best in the country at this point.
