According to a recent report by Spanish news source Mundo Deportivo, La Liga giants Real Madrid are said to have decided that Borussia Dortmund’s Norwegian international striker Erling Haaland is going to be their prime target during the upcoming summer transfer window. It has been suggested that the European super-club will go to any extent to bring the youngster to the Spanish capital next season, as they look to add more firepower in the final third of the pitch.
It has been suggested that Los Blancos are on the lookout for a new striker in the summer and that they’ve finalised on Haaland. Real Madrid are said to be the frontrunners for his signature, with the Spanish club willing to meet his £68m release clause.
Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola has already talked up his relationship with Real Madrid and how he intends to ‘take a great footballer there in the summer’. The report claims that Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham are keen on the youngster’s services too.
What Is Real Madrid’s Current Attacking Situation?
Los Blancos didn’t start the league season in the best of fashion but have since displayed an excellent turnaround in form. With that said though, it must be conceded that they have been overly dependent on Karim Benzema to lead the line and create openings continually. To that effect, Zinedine Zidane sanctioned the big-money acquisition of former Bundesliga sensation Luka Jovic in the summer. Still, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say he failed to live up to expectations.
Also, despite the addition of one of the best players in the world in Eden Hazard, Madrid have struggled to keep some of their key names fit all through the campaign. The likes of Marco Asensio and the aforementioned Belgian have missed massive chunks of the campaign, and a lot of the onus has fallen onto the shoulders of Benzema. Moreover, the likes of Gareth Bale and Isco haven’t had the greatest of impacts either, with the younger attackers in Rodrygo and Vinicius stepping up to the plate a lot more often.
Why Signing Haaland Would Be A Spectacular Move By Madrid?
The young Norwegian is still only 19-years-old but has been consistently displaying his sheer quality all through the current campaign. Having broken various scoring records in his home country of Norway, the youngster’s transition from Salzburg to Dortmund has been seamless, to say the least. Goalscoring just seems to come naturally to the forward, who has scored nine goals from eight games in the Bundesliga this season. With ten goals from eight fixtures in the Champions League as well, there’s no doubt that this would be a stellar signing.
Los Blancos have historically been a side filled with superstars across all the different areas of the pitch. But, this current Real Madrid side is quite far away from the benchmark that was set by the Galacticos all those years ago. Although the addition of a player like Hazard is obviously a step in the right direction, moving for a striker of Haaland’s quality could be the catalyst that carries this Madrid team into the next level.
