According to a recent report from Euro Calcio Mercato, Aston Villa are readying a three-year contract for Napoli’s attacker Jose Callejon. Villa are reportedly locked in a three-way battle between Valencia and Sevilla for the 33-year-old. The report also adds that Callejon wants to leave Napoli with the winger getting offers from MLS and China as well.
The winger was linked with Villa even in the January transfer window, but the move didn’t materialise. Callejon is going to be out of contract in the summer, and he will be available on a free transfer.
Any chance of Villa signing a player of Callejon’s calibre would depend on them securing their top-flight status first. With that being unsure, other clubs could probably be in a better position to complete a deal for Callejon right now. The 33-year-old’s agent gave an update not too long ago that Napoli’s president De Laurentiis wants the winger to renew his contract.
There is also uncertainty about what would happen to players whose contracts are running down by June. With the season likely to be extended, it remains to be seen what decision the footballing bodies will come to in the end.
Callejon has managed two goals and nine assists in all competitions this season. The five-time Spanish international emerged from Real Madrid’s academy, but he made his name once he arrived at Napoli in 2013. He has been a mainstay on the flanks for the Serie A side for quite some time, but now it seems like his journey with them is going to come to an end.
What can Callejon bring?
Villa currently have Trezeguet, Jota and Anwar El Ghazi as their options on the right flank. Callejon will bring the much-needed experience and composure in the attacking third. The Spaniard’s link-up play and positioning are often top-notch, and he is a genuine goal threat upfront. Callejon is also known for his defensive contribution as he usually works hard for his side on the pitch.
Good signing for Smith?
Even at 33, he is still regular for a club like Napoli, and we believe that he would be a handy signing for Dean Smith. The fact that he is available on a free transfer makes this move even more lucrative. However, as mentioned, Villa will need to ensure that they are still playing in the Premier League to have any chance of signing someone like Callejon.
