EFL Championship high-flyers Leeds United dropped down to second place on the league table after they suffered a shocking home defeat to relegation threatened Wigan. The Whites were in complete control of possession right from the off, but the defensive mentality deployed by the away side neutralised all of Leeds’ attacking threat. An own goal from Pablo Hernandez was enough to gift Wigan all three points on the night, as West Brom’s win at Luton Town carried them to the top of the table.
Leeds United Players Rated In Gutting Defeat Vs Wigan Athletic
Kiko Casilla – 5.5
The former Real Madrid man displayed why Los Blancos sold him on a couple of occasions in the first half, and then made a mistake while dealing with the corner that led to the Wigan goal.
Luke Ayling – 6.5
The experienced full-back wasn’t required to do too much defending owing to the Latics’ lack of an attacking threat. Got forward and delivered a couple of neat crosses in the second half.
Ben White – 7
The centre-half did an excellent job against the Wigan attackers as he looked unfazed by any of the counter-attacking opportunities that they created. Defended well from crosses into the box.
Liam Cooper – 6.5
The defender had a rather comfortable evening at the heart of the defence considering that the Latics had around 25% share of possession and only managed two shots on target.
Ezgjan Alioski – 6
The Macedonian full-back wasn’t able to have his usual attacking impact owing to Wigan’s deep defensive line. Didn’t create too much going forward as the Whites used the other flank more often.
Mateusz Klich – 6
The midfielder did well to link up play in the middle of the park with his short passing and quick movement. Tried to impart some energy to the core of the Leeds squad as well.
Helder Costa – 4.5
The attacker was acquired with massive expectations on his shoulder, but so far he’s proved to be a futile investment. Didn’t offer anything in an attacking sense and continuously gave the ball away.
Stuart Dallas – 5
The versatile midfield star looked rather uncomfortable in the middle of the park as he couldn’t seem to pick out two accurate passes in a row. Had to track back quite a lot over the ninety as well.
Pablo Hernandez – 6
Unfortunately gave away the goal that proved to be costly, but worked fairly hard apart from that. Tried to break through the Wigan back-line but wasn’t able to find the killer touch
Jack Harrison – 5.5
The youngster came extremely close in the first-half when he hit the upright, but looked like a different player since then. Didn’t offer anything meaningful despite putting in a lot of effort.
Patrick Bamford – 5.5
The former Chelsea product had an evening to forget as none of the chances that were presented to him seemed to be going his way. Held the ball up, but didn’t offer any penetration.
Substitutes
Tyler Roberts – 6
Came on and tried to impart a little bit of much-needed energy to the side. Maintained possession and tried to bring his teammates into the flow of play as well.
