With the January transfer window done and dusted, it is time for Tottenham Hotspur to recover their form after a rough start to 2020. The Lilywhites have recently secured a sensational win over Manchester City, which could go a long way in boosting their confidence. But, in this article, we will talk about three players who still need to step up their performances during the remainder of the campaign.
Gedson Fernandes
As one of the two new signings for Tottenham in the recently concluded winter transfer window, the pressure on Gedson Fernandes is immense. He was initially brought in as an alternative to Harry Winks and Eric Dier in the holding midfielder role, where Jose Mourinho has lacked the presence of a reliable option.
However, Gedson, in his appearances against Norwich, Watford and Southampton (in the FA Cup) hasn’t shown a great deal of promise. Understandably, the Portuguese player needs time settling into English football, but it is fair to point out that he only has one and a half season to prove himself before his loan contract expires.
Hence, Gedson is someone who certainly needs to make an impact sooner rather than later, if he is to become a regular first-team member of the Tottenham Hotspur side, ahead of Winks, Sissoko and Dier.
Lucas Moura
With Harry Kane out with a thigh injury and Tottenham failing to sign a reliable alternative, the onus will be on Lucas Moura to provide that missing productivity in the final third. But, the Brazilian has failed in his bid to fill in the shoes of the England international.
Playing alongside Son Heung-Min, the ex-PSG star has often appeared sloppy in front of goal. Although his work-rate has been solid, the forward’s finishing leaves a lot to be desired. Therefore, Lucas’ form during the remainder of the campaign could go a long way in dictating Tottenham’s fate this season as they look to make an impression in Europe and return among the elites of English football.
Giovani Lo Celso
While both Lucas and Gedson have struggled to perform, Giovani Lo Celso is the only player on this list who has pretty much been on the ascendancy, of late.
Indeed, after a tough start to the season, the Argentine is flourishing under the tutelage of Mourinho. So much so, that his loan contract from Real Betis was made permanent by Tottenham Hotspur in January. But now, with Christian Eriksen leaving Tottenham, Lo Celso will face the extra pressure of replacing the Dane in the creative department.
So far, Lo Celso has done quite a fantastic job, with his offensive movements and clever passing as well as his versatility. And the fans will be hoping that his creativity could help Tottenham make a sustained bid to finish top 4 in the Premier League.
