According to a recent report from Daily Record, Newcastle United are among a host of clubs linked with a move for Celtic’s in-form striker Odsonne Edouard. The likes of Everton and Manchester United are also linked with him. The striker moved to Celtic for £9m from Paris Saint-Germain, and he has been a big hit at Celtic Park since his arrival.
Why Newcastle United need a striker?
Newcastle United meanwhile are currently the joint-worst scoring team in the English top-flight this campaign as they have managed just 24 goals. Summer arrival Joelinton has been a massive disappointment as he has bagged one goal in the Premier League this season.
Other forward options like Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto are yet to score in the Premier League. Carroll and Gayle have struggled with injuries as well. Hence, it is understandable why the Tyneside outfit is keeping track of Edouard.
The French forward has been in terrific form this season and is currently the top scorer in the Premiership with 20 goals to his name already.
What will Edouard bring at St. James’ Park?
The 22-year-old forward seems to have everything to his game which a top striker needs. Edouard is more than just a goal scorer as he can link up play well and that is why he has 17 assists in all competitions this season. He is quick and can surprise defenders with his impressive footwork and dribbling skills. The striker can also act as a targetman as the Celtic man is really good at holding up play. However, the former PSG man is at his best when he gets to make runs between the channels and stretch play.
Premier League will indeed be a step up from the Scottish Premiership, but Edouard seems to have the talent to thrive in the English top flight. The 22-year-old is also a France u-21 international, and he has bagged 11 goals for them in just six appearances. He is still young, and one would expect him to improve further.
The Magpies should certainly look to get the Frenchman in the summer as he can solve some of United’s goal-scoring woes. However, the competition to get his signature could be tough and the striker might prefer a move to a club where he might be offered a chance to play in European football. Nevertheless, The Toon have spent big money in the past year, and they should try everything in their means to get this talented Celtic striker.
