According to a recent report from Brighton & Hove Independent, Leeds United would like to sign Ben White permanently in the summer, but they are unlikely to complete a move for him with immense competition on the horizon. Leicester City are the latest team to join the race for him. The likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested.
White’s price revealed
White is being valued upwards of £24m. The defender signed a new contract before moving to Leeds United in the summer on a season-long loan. His signing was met with a bit of scepticism as White hadn’t played in the Premier League or the Championship before. His only major appearance came with League One outfit Peterborough United. Moreover, White was replacing Pontus Jansson, who was arguably one of the best defenders in the Championship.
However, the English centre back has been the mainstay in United’s defence since day one. The defender has played every minute of the Championship so far. The 22-year-old has made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Whites.
It is no surprise that United are interested in getting him on a permanent deal. However, his impressive performances haven’t gone unnoticed with some of the heavyweights of the Premier League now interested in him. Even Brighton must be aware of his prowess, and we believe that they too would want to keep hold of him for themselves.
It goes without saying that if Leeds want to have even the slightest of chance to sign him permanently, then they would have to win promotion this season. White has showcased that he can play at a higher level and Champions League holders Liverpool also being interested in him is a testament to his abilities.
What are White’s qualities?
White is often calm and composed at the back, and he seems to make the right decision at the right time. He knows when to stick tight to his man or when to fall back deep in defence. The defender has made crucial interceptions and tackles, and he is known for nicking the ball away from attackers smoothly. To go with that, he is equally capable of playing with the ball on his feet. Every team now looks for a ball playing centre half and White can form a good base of attack for his side.
Leeds United will need to move up a division and offer a sizeable fee to Brighton to lure him in the summer. Even then that might not be enough with Liverpool, Tottenham and Leicester now interested who can offer him European football.
