The reigning Premier League champions Manchester City fell to their sixth defeat of the season after Pep Guardiola’s side lost to José Mourinho’s well-drilled Tottenham Hotspur outfit by a 2-0 scoreline. The game began as expected, with Manchester City controlling possession and had the lion’s share of the chances. Ilkay Gundogan missed a penalty in the first half before Oleksandr Zinchenko got sent off for a second yellow early into the second. Despite only registering the two shots on target all night, a goal each from Spurs debutant Steven Bergwijn and Heung-Min Son were enough to move the North London giants up to within four points of Chelsea in fourth place.
Here Are The Manchester City Player Ratings:
Ederson – 6
The shot-stopper had a questionable moment in the first half when he completely scuffed a clearance but did well overall. Couldn’t have done much about either of the Spurs goals.
Kyle Walker – 7
The wing-back tried his best to inject pace and energy into the City attack but wasn’t able to create too much in the final third. Watched Bergwijn well through the ninety minutes as well.
Fernandinho – 7.5
The Brazilian stand-in centre-half was undoubtedly City’s best player on the night, as he didn’t allow Spurs too many chances to run at Ederson. Moved the ball around well and linked up play too.
Nicolas Otamendi – 6.5
The Argentine veteran had a pretty comfortable evening for the most part, before he lost Son in the lead up to the second Spurs goal. Held the line well and stepped forward whenever required.
Oleksandr Zinchenko – 4
The full-back made some good attacking strides all through the first half before a moment of madness earned him a second yellow card. The trend of the fixture changed from that point.
Kevin De Bruyne – 6.5
Tried really hard to make something happen, but like the rest of the City team, he seemed to be having an off day. A lot of good passes, but nothing effective in the final third.
Rodri – 6.5
The Spaniard was a solid presence in the middle of the park but didn’t offer much in terms of his attacking intensity. He was sluggish in possession and slowed down multiple City attacks.
Ilkay Gundogan – 5
The German international had an extremely poor outing despite making some neat passes in midfield. He missed a crucial penalty early on, before wasting a sitter in the second period.
Riyad Mahrez – 6
The trickster tried to make things happen but wasn’t able to impact the game after the half-time break. Made some good passes and movements in the first half, but didn’t create in the final third.
Sergio Aguero – 6
Earned a penalty in the first half after a long VAR check, only for Gundogan to miss from the spot. Had a couple of decent chances but was sacrificed by Pep in the second half.
Raheem Sterling – 4.5
The Englishman’s struggles for City continued on the night as he didn’t offer anything meaningful to Guardiola’s side in the final third. Tried to win a penalty and was fortunate not to be sent off for diving.
Substitutes
Joao Cancelo – 5
Came on as Guardiola tried to steady the ship, but the move backfired drastically. The full-back held his own, but wasn’t able to impact the tie.
Gabriel Jesus – 5
The Brazilian got into a couple of decent positions and made some dangerous runs as well. Never looked like he had a goal in him on the night though.
Bernardo Silva – N/A
Didn’t have time to make an impact.
