Rangers have struggled since the winter break especially in domestic games, but they have had a silver lining in Europe atleast. They made it through to the next round by going past Braga who hadn’t lost a single group game this campaign.
However, everyone would agree that Gerrard was brought in to stop Celtic’s domination in the league and he has failed to achieve that so far with the Hoops being 12 points clear on the top of the table. Sky Sports Pundit Charlie Nicholas, who was a striker for Arsenal and Celtic in his heydays, has claimed that Rangers should sell three of their players in the summer to raise funds to strengthen their squad.
Ex Celtic Ace Advises Rangers To Sell These Three First Team Players
Speaking to the Express (25 February, page 56), Nicholas said, “The Light Blues must cash in on Morelos and use the money to strengthen their team. Nikola Katic and Borna Barisic have market value as Croatia international defenders, and if decent bids come in for them, then they ought to take the money because both players can be replaced. Morelos is also expendable, and that is why I would cash in. If Rangers are offered £20million for the Colombian, they should accept it.”
It is undoubtedly a controversial statement from Nicholas as all the three Rangers players can be claimed as first-team regulars. However, it wouldn’t be wrong to consider selling one or two of the three if Rangers can get a better balance in their squad with the money they gain. We try to look at what Gerrard should do with them.
Alfredo Morelos
Gerrard had insisted before that it would take a top offer for Rangers to sell him. However, his price tag might be going down after some of his recent performances. Nevertheless, he remains an instrumental player for Rangers upfront. However, an offer around £25m would certainly be tempting for the Bears. We believe that the Bears should cash in on him if they get a proposal around or upwards of £25m.
Nikola Katic
The Croatian defender has produced mixed performances in the past two seasons at Rangers. However, he is still 23, and one would expect him to improve with more time and experience. We believe that the Gers should hold on to him for the time being. However, if Gerrard decides to bring in a new ball-playing defender in the summer, then Katic’s head could be on the chopping block.
Borna Barisic
This will strictly be a big no from our side as Barisic has evolved himself into the best fullback in the division. His attacking output, coupled with astute defending makes him a stand out left-back. There is no way that Gerrard and Co should think about selling Barisic. Replacing him could be the toughest as finding the right mix of defensive and attacking qualities in a fullback is not easy.
