According to a recent report by The Liverpool Echo, Everton midfielder Andre Gomes is eyeing a return after the mid-season break after he returned to training this week. He has been out of action since November after he sustained a severe ankle injury against Tottenham Hotspur. The same source has also revealed that the Portuguese midfielder will be involved in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for the final 12 matches of this Premier League campaign.
Gomes’ Impressive Spell At Merseyside So Far
Gomes was a regular feature in the Toffees first-team in the previous campaign and was heavily involved for them in the early stages of this season as well. He has made nine appearances for the Merseyside outfit this term but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his club.
Gomes has averaged 1.0 tackles, 0.3 interceptions, 0.5 clearances, 0.3 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored). The 26-year-old has also represented Portugal at various youth levels and has also earned 29 senior caps for the Portuguese national side thus far.
What Does The European Sensation Bring To The Table?
Gomes is a deceptively quick midfielder who can pass the ball accurately in midfield and excels at retaining possession for his side. He can also make some driving runs in the opposition half, which makes a constant menace for the opposition.
Gomes Returns To Training: Big Boost For The Merseyside Outfit?
The Toffees are waiting on a lot of first-team players to return and help them salvage what has been a disappointing season in the Premier League. Gomes’ return will help them cope with fixture congestion better and will also be a timely boost for Carlo Ancelotti ahead of what could be a make or break season for him at Goodison Park.
However, Everton have to ensure that they don’t rush Gomes back and should concentrate on introducing him gradually so that they maintain a run of consistency with their performances on the pitch.
