According to a recent report by Jeunes Footeux, Everton will have a fierce battle on their hands in the race to secure the signature of Genk attacking midfielder Jonathan David this summer. It is believed that the Toffees will face competition from Arsenal, Leicester City, RB Leipzig, Napoli and Lazio in pursuit of the Canadian youngster (via Jeunes Footeux).
However, the same source has also claimed that Olympique Lyonnais is leading the chase to land the talented attacker whose current contract at the Luminus Arena is set to run out in the summer of 2023.
David’s Excellent Form For Genk This Season
David has enjoyed a fantastic campaign in the Jupiler Pro League where he has mesmerised with his goal-scoring performances for Genk. He has banged in 19 goals and grabbed ten assists in 35 appearances for the Belgian giants this term in all competitions. The fact that the Canadian prospect has created and scored so many goals this season goes to highlight how far he has improved over the past year while operating in the number ten position.
The 20-year-old has already earned 12 senior caps for the Canadian national side and has netted 11 goals for his country thus far. He has not only proven his value at the club level but also the international stage as well, which explains why so many top European clubs are monitoring his development in Belgium.
What Does The Canada International Offer On The Field?
David boasts excellent pace that allows him to complete some dangerous dribbles with the ball towards the opposition penalty box. He is also a commanding presence up top as he can win most of his aerial duels by out jumping his marker in the final third. The Canadian whizkid has transformed himself into a prolific goal-scorer, but there are some question marks over his work-rate off the ball. He is also versatile enough to operate as a centre-forward if required.
Should Everton Put Up A Fight For David’s Services?
The Toffees need to add more quality to their frontline if Carlo Ancelotti wants to take his side to the next level. Hence, an attacking midfielder of David’s skillset will undeniably be a welcome signing for the Merseyside club this summer. Furthermore, the Canadian attacker will also allow Everton to be more flexible with their formation and tactics next season.
Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bernard can both play in the number ten position. However, they have often been used in other areas of the pitch due to their inability to find consistency in terms of their productivity going forward. Therefore, the Toffees should consider going all out to land David at the end of this season as he will be well worth the fight.
